About Sandy

So much of the last week or so for me has been spent thinking about
sherrold. (She has been battling cancer for awhile now). And I think of a lot of things, a lot of conversations I've had with her at cons over the years. Many of them about vidding, about shared fandoms, some of them about fandom in general. No matter what the topic -- whether it's serious or strictly lulz -- she is always funny, always insightful. (And she is very patient and forgiving with a fan - that would be me - whose superpower often seems to be, well, putting her foot in her mouth.)

I keep coming back to my first Escapade, in Goleta in 1998, in a "vidding 101" type workshop Sandy conducted in that little hotel room across from the main convention space. And I can still see her there showing a few rabid wannabes a vid, and saying "When the song says 'I' that's when you need to show your POV character." (Someone's hand -- it wasn't mine -- went up and asked what POV is, just in case you thought she was being Captain Obvious...it was 1998, folks.)

Mentoring wannabe vidders is something Sandy has done so much of over the years. But it occurs to me that vidders in fandom who have never met her are just as influenced by her as those of us for whom she's actively mentored or beta'ed, or those she's stood before in front of countless panels, workshops and vid reviews. Because if you are a vidder and haven't met Sandy, even in the (unlikely) event you've never seen one of her vids, you've almost surely seen and been influenced by the vids of those she has directly influenced. If you love Killa's work or Carol's or Lum's, or anyone who has been influenced by them, then Sandy is cruicial to your experience of What Vidding Is.

Sandy means so much to so many people -- it's impossible to envision fandom without her, and we are all so much richer for her friendship, knowledge and kindness. Original post on Dreamwidth | Leave a comment on DW | read
