It's been almost a week now, and this goddamn flu has STILL not gone away completely. I've used up, like five boxes of Kleenex, my throat is a mess and just now started getting better, any more hot drinks and I'll be having steam coming out of my ears! Because I wanted to get better in time for Christmas, I mostly stayed at home these days, reading and watching things. Brilliant, British things. ;)
I finished Life on Mars and watched The Devil's Whore and State of Play. Which all have the amazing John Simm in common.
Started with Life on Mars - Brilliant. Terrific. Like I said in my other entry, WHY HAD I NOT DISCOVERED THIS PERFECTION EARLIER? I watched all sixteen episodes in two days and all I can say is - wow. I don't know why they bother remaking this in the US, it's never gonna surpass the original cast/story/acting/ending (because no way in hell is ABC going with the UK ending). ilu Harvey Keitel, but there can only be one GENE MOTHERFUCKING GENIE.
(This scene. OOHHHH MY GOD.)
And there can only be one John Simm.
Which takes me to The Devil's Whore, the channel 4 miniseries about the Civil War in England. I wanted to watch it anyway, but after finishing Life on Mars I knew I needed more Simm. He played a real historic figure called Edward Sexby and he did the name justice if you ask me. The mini series had some minor flaws (in terms of historical accuracy etc.) but you guys MUST WATCH IT. The cinematography was so very beautiful, like everything was shot and framed as if it were a painting. I mean, look at this:
The colors were beautiful and the cast was brilliant. Andrea Riseborough (who played the title role) was excellent and so were Dominic West (WHEN am I finally going to watch The Wire?) and Michael Fassbender (who was amazing in Hunger but I initially didn't recognize him because of how different he looked). And John Simm kicked ass, both literally and figuratively. :D His character went through so many different emotions and he displayed them all perfectly. Someone called it "EMO BAROQUE MANPAIN" and I'm inclined to agree.
And them. THEM.
I don't wanna spoil anything but THEY WERE SO BADASS TOGETHER. I wanna flail about a scene they had in the last episode that wasn't even sexy/cuddly, just them being themselves.
I just about melted. WATCH THE DEVIL'S HO WHORE PEOPLE. I BEG OF YOU, KIND SIRS AND MILADIES.
And then I watched the BBC's State of Play.
As you can tell I was on a Simm marathon. It has been said many times, but one more won't hurt - THIS SERIES IS AMAZING. And if you haven't watched it, rent the DVDs and DO SO NOW. One of the best political thrillers I have ever seen, and I was even more fascinated by it, being a journalism student. I am not even kidding - best thing to come out in the genre since All the President's Men. It was directed by David Yates (who does Harry Potter, OotP and HBP, now) and the casting is like one of the best ensembles EVER. I mean: John Simm. James McAvoy ♥. David Morrissey. Bill Nighy. Kelly McDonald. Enough said.
And I never even realized James was in it as much as he was! I knew he was in it and I thought it was a bit part, but his awesomeness was present nearly all the time. :D They are remaking it (of course) in the US, and even though Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman are in it, I still don't think they can match the collective awesomeness of the above. AND RUSSELL CROWE, YOU ARE NOT CAL MCCAFFREY. ILU BUT JOHN SIMM IS CAL. IDGI, STOP TRYING TO REMAKE PERFECTION.
I have been fangirling John Simm a lot... Because I was just so, so impressed by him. I just now discovered how amazing he is, the range that he has as an actor, and of course the sexiness. And the pure awesomeness, embodied in the following clip from his stint on Doctor Who, series three. Where he dances and sings along to the Scissor Sisters' I Can't Decide.

I LOVE YOU. I LOVE YOU.
I shall leave you now, with a question. I just started watching Frost/Nixon, with Michael Sheen. And I would like to ask:
HOW THE HECK ARE THESE TWO MEN THE SAME PERSON?
SERIOUSLY. HOW?
