Oddly enough the first sign of Harry Potter's insanity was Draco Malfoy's confusion. By Christmas of his 5th year, the blond Slytherin was far more likely to show up to the wrong class than the right one, call people by the wrong names, and generally exhibit all the signs of extremely early onset dementia. His parents, extremely alarmed, took him to several specialists. The verdict: crudely executed Obliviates had scrambled the poor boy's memory. Given half a year or so, he was expected to recover. One of the specialists did manage to recover some of what the Obliviates were meant to hide. It took five Stunning spells and four or so assorted other hexes to knock Lucius Malfoy unconscious and stop him from his stated goal of "Hunting down that damn half-blood making him pay for what he has done to my boy!"

The Wizarding World was in shock. A crime of such magnitude, committed by such a young boy. Obviously the Daily Prophet had been right. The boy was deranged. Dumbledore shook his head sadly. He'd placed far too much responsibility on shoulders far too young for it. And so Harry was carted off to the secure mental ward at St. Mungo's for treatment, there to wait until he was declared sane or Voldemort killed him. Lucius Malfoy had tried to push for his incarceration in Azkaban, but the Wizengamot had decided to be merciful. Of course, being placed in the mental ward at St. Mungo's wasn't really mercy so much as a nice warm hell in contrast to Azkaban's cold hell, but no one really wanted to contemplate that at the time.

Two years later, while Harry Potter raved in his padded cell about blond incubi, and the world fell apart outside, we all started to think, better a madman in a cell then a free man in hell. Or perhaps the memories and innocence of one boy were more than enough of a price to pay for the world we knew.

Too bad hindsight is 20-20.
