I'm on my spring break now so hopefully with all my freetime I can finish all my Naruto stories. I have to write a Lee/Gaara story that's been festering in my brain for a while. I need to work on that one pronto :)

Anyway I hope you enjoy this little drabble!!

Trying by Melfina Lupin

Author's Note: I love Shikamaru's mom. Heck, I love his whole family. Even if she is a bitch (sometimes), I think she loves her son and husband very much. Nagging is a form of love, right?

Warning: Some swearing and spoilers from chapter 328 and onward

Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto

It was a week after his sensei's death when finally Shikamaru emerged from his room, pale, thin, and recking of foul cigarette smoke, hardly recognizable. He had neglected missions, the clouds, his friends, and family for the calm dark peace of his room where his brain could shut down and he could exists as a thoughtless being.

His parents left him alone for the most part. They knew that Shikamaru was going through a tough time and needed time alone to get things straightened out. He had done this kind of thing before, years earlier when he was seven and a wolf had gotten to his favorite doe. He had cried in Yoshino's arms for hours before retreating behind his bedroom door.

They acted like nothing was out of the ordinary, like their son was not having a mental breakdown, but they were always extra quiet when they were in the house. Yoshino made sure to make Shikamaru's favorite meals and put them in front of his door and if she needed to bitch at her idiot of a husband, she dragged him outside to the backyard.

If things got out of hand, then Shikaku would intervene. He was sure that Shikamaru wouldn't do something as reckless like killing himself but his son was close to Asuma and probably blamed himself for the death. If it came down to that or if Shikamaru didn't come out soon, Shikaku would break the unspoken promise between them, rip that door apart and kick his son's ass.

Luckily he didn't gave to resort to that.

Yoshino was in the kitchen, fixing lunch before her lazy husband would come home for his afternoon nap. When she heard the door in the hallway slide open, her stomach knotted, knowing that it was Shikamaru's door. She tried to be nice. Really she did. After all she hadn't seen him in a week.

“Shikamaru, honey, do you want some onigiri? I made your favorite.” She turned her head and regarded her son with a gentle smile that was quickly replaced with a disapproving frown. “Shikamaru, you smell like an astray! So you're smoking now? Do you want to die young and leave you father and I all alone? Do you want us to bury you? Ungrateful boy. You're our only child. What will happen to the Nara name when you die?!”

She felt like throwing a handful of rice at him. She did her best to raise him to be the perfect son, and this was what she got?!

“You look awful! And your hair! Do take a shower and put you hair up. You know I can't stand it down like that. You look like a girl.”

Shikamaru only rolled his eyes and turned to leave. “It's good to be back, ma.”

“Be sure to put all your smelly clothes in the hamper. I'm going to clean them and your room today. It probably reeks as bad as you do.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Don't give me that attitude, young man. Do you know how much you made me and your father worry,” she shouted as Shikamaru left.

“Sorry!” He shouted back, just as irritated as his mom.

She started to go back to making lunch before she remembered that she forgot to tell her son the most important thing. “I love you!”

“I love you too, ma!”

She heard the door the the bathroom slam shout. Stupid, inconsiderate son.

“Don't slam the doors, Shikamaru!”
