Caden Nor
Night set, the nightmare begun. Drums beat out side the village. My eyes shot wide open springing from underneath my covers. I hastened to get dressed, grabbing my axe as I headed outside. I heard a soft voice behind me, "Lock the door." I said, not bothering to hear my daughters reply as I walked out into the night air, slamming the door behind me.
Rain beat down in sheets, my boots sunk deeply into the softened soil. Other men were stepping out of their house. In moments there were twenty three men standing around, some brandishing swords, others scythes, a few axes. All of which in poor condition, "Must be bandits out there." One of the men spoke out. The drums had softened. The taunted us like wolves would before charging in on prey. A piercing howl, than silence before the chaos. No torch would stay lit in this rain, but they had to be stopped before they reached the village. With each step my feet sunk deeper into the soil. My right hand clenched tighter onto the handle of my ax. I never bothered to look over my shoulder, even if I walked alone I would stand, "Caden, are you mad!?"
I shook my head as I continued my steady pace, "No, but I don't want my wife raped after I'm murdered without at least putting up a fight." I stopped briefly, looking over my shoulder, "Besides... Do you want to live forever?" Most of the men had started to fall in line behind me, but a few stayed behind. There was nineteen of us total and nineteen would come back. As we marched past the last few houses into the darkness outside of the village, fear crept up every mans spine. The darkness seemed almost thick. An eery feeling was creeping upon all of us, but we continued further into the darkness. We never thought the darkness was the enemy...
They were upon us in moments. Half the men were taken down in a few seconds. I only managed to get one swing off, only for the blade to bounce off the man like he was in full plate before he pounced upon. Pain seered through my bad as the man slammed me to the ground. I could feel him tearing into my neck, than... I was back at the village. The world felt like a dream. I was watching, but I couldn't fully control. The first person to run out to greet us was my daughter. Her small hands wrapped around my legs and I picked her up like I had a thousand times before... A hunger over took my like I had never felt before, with basic instinct I drove my fangs into her neck. She clenched onto my tighter, screaming daddy over and over. I could hear screams echo around the village as they too were attacked and they fed the hunger. Eventually, the voice saying daddy became soft. The body in my hands went limp and the grip she had slackened. I dropped her, useless to me now and sprung upon the next victim... Eventually, there were no more villagers, only each other. Turning on each other like rabid dogs, we tore upon each other in a frenzy. Than... I was alone.
