You know, it's strange to think that as recently as a couple of years ago, I felt that the idea of the Internet as a social forum was ridiculous and looked down my nose at the idea that one could form meaningful human relationships through it.

Because now...now--! Off the top of my head, I can think of bewarethespork , the_sun_is_up , elle_white , violetisblue , akashasheiress , shaherizad , and tea_doll as people who are definite positive people for me to have in my life, who enhance my everyday experience in many of the same ways as 'normal' friends, and who in most cases I could never possibly have met if not for Interwebs. These are people who I love talking to, worry about if they're not doing well, try to support in their jobs or relationships or studies as much as I am able and as much as they allow me to, and to varying but significant degrees really do care greatly about and appreciate having in my life.

I still don't subscribe to the idea of the Internet as this great new breakthrough in the nature of the human race, mainly because I feel that the real world-communications breakthrough happened in the Victorian era, before which it was not only difficult but impossible for people in New England, Australia, California, Indiana, and the Faroe Islands to really count themselves friends. But I definitely feel very lucky to have it as an instrument of society in my life. Without the people I listed above, and probably more people who I'm forgetting, this year so far would have been absolute Hell for me.

So, to all of you who have become in very real senses friends of mine, I'd like to send out love and friendship and all of the attendant feelings and tell you of my sincere desire to help make your lives as awesome as you so oft help make mine.

i love you guys
