Icon meme!

the_sun_is_up  asked me about:

'Ian/Barbara'

This icon shows Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, two of the first three companions in the history of the long-running British television series Doctor Who. Ian and Barbara were high school teachers specialising in science and history, respectively. Over their year-and-a-half run in the show, Ian was knighted by Richard Lionheart, Barbara was worshipped as a god in pre-Columbian Mexico, Barbara ran over a roadblock of Daleks in a lorry, Ian befriended Marco Polo, Barbara destroyed a Lovecraftian god that had enslaved a planet of ant-folk, and they spent several episodes lounging around in a Roman villa feeding each other grapes. They remain the only Happily Married couple to travel together as companions, even though they weren't even actually married.

'You're dead and she knows exactly where'

This icon is of Ryougi Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai. Shiki can see lines connecting people and things to the concept of death, and cutting along these lines (with anything, really) obliterates those people or objects entirely. Shiki is an absolutely amazing character and I love her so very much. This icon is just...GUH. So pretty.

'Can I cry?'

This is from Kara no Kyoukai as well and shows Asagami Fujino, an utterly wretched abuse victim (almost EVERY kind of abuse) who after unlocking great powers of mind goes on a rampage that is to rapists and child abusers what Inglourious Basterds is to Nazis. This sounds very seventies-exploitation but it's actually quite grey and nuanced. The keyword is the last thing that Fujino says before she thinks that she'll be killed. She lives and later in the series is shown recovering from her trauma and working towards being able to have a happy life.

'At what speed must I live'

With this icon we have Akari and Takaki, the main couple from Shinkai Makoto's absolutely heartbreaking romantic drama Five Centimetres per Second. This is not a film to be watched lightly. It is LOSS AND YEARNING, FULL FORCE.

'Ace is boss'

Ace is another Doctor Who companion, from the late eighties. She is a working-class girl from a horrendous suburb of London who was 'chosen' by the alien wolf god Fenric to entrap the Doctor in an eternal chess game. Needless to say, she refuses to do so once she finds out. Along the way, she beats the crap out of a Dalek with a baseball bat, blows things up, goes through several Girls of the Week (the Doctor didn't have girls of the week at this point, the female companion did), and did I mention she beats the crap out of a Dalek with a baseball bat? Because it called her small. This is the original Crowning Moment of Awesome, the scene that inspired that whole section of TVTropes. Yeah. So. Pretty boss. 'Happiness will prevail' is from an episode that was an allegorical attack on Margaret Thatcher and her placid, dronelike middle-class suburban supporters.

The keyword for this icon is actually supposed to be 'Revolt obey compromise deceive', which is the rubric for judging how human beings respond to authority being levied on them in the writings of Charles Williams. Ace has chosen to revolt. Go, Ace! Teach those smart-ass alien dictators a lesson!

doctor who, a movie is fine too, meme, type-moon
