These pets were forced to be left behind. That video kills me when you see the dogs sooo trusting coming up for food and petting. The link about the bigger pets being shot because *could* be dangerous - is pure judgement! My poor Kaji would probably be shot but not Kiko because she's little... but maybe she would be because she can be mean when you first meet her. Ack! You KNOW these stranded pets are loved and someone misses them a lot. It sucks that people couldn't take their pets with them. I would much rather stay WITH my pets than leave them to die. The story about the boy who had his dog taken away from him when he was evacuated made me start to cry at work when a client told me about it. I saw in the paper this morning that the lady that could only take her husband's liver meds with them so had to leave her dog behind was reunited. Pets are seriously children..and I would fight tooth and nail if I had to leave my pets behind to who-knows-what. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/04/katrina.pets.ap/

I sooo wish I could go help the Katrina disaster relief efforts - but mainly for the pets that were left behind and now have to fend for themselves. I cry every time I see this on the news or hear about it. A vet, a tech and a kennel assistant is going over to help with the Pasado Rescue in New Orleans next week. I wish I could go (or were even invited TO go ..argh). I wish I could afford ($300 plus living expenses) to go down with them to help save the animals. If I could afford it, I would work tirelessly, endlessly to help the pets out, to save those that can be, and to lay to rest peacefully the ones that couldn't be.
