Andy Blume has been driving city trams for more than 10 years and regularly posts foul rants on the internet via a blog and Twitter.
The 33-year-old faced a disciplinary hearing last month for using his phone to take pictures while at the controls of his tram and posting them online.
He was not stood down.
Yarra Trams last night pledged to take "swift and decisive action" over the matter after being contacted by the Herald Sun.
Mr Blume claims to be the social networking site's "most lovable sex offender" three years running and has more than 1100 followers.
Among the driver's online posts is a photograph of commuters at a tram stop above the caption: "Hanging back so everyone has to wait in the cold until departure time."
Another photo of a sleeping passenger carries the caption: "That dude has been asleep all trip. Let's see how far I can carry him."
As well as pornographic images, the tram driver has posted pictures taken from behind the controls while his tram was in motion.
And he has posted photos of people involved in serious accidents, some involving his own tram.
"This is the best collision I ever had," he posts under a photo of his wrecked tram.
"Also serves as a nice reminder to stay out of the f---ing way."
Yarra Trams spokesman Colin Tyrus said the company had no knowledge of the offensive content posted on the photo site Twitpic until it was brought to its attention by the Herald Sun yesterday.
"We immediately launched an investigation and have been trying to contact the employee, who is on leave this week," he said.
Transport Minister Terry Mulder said he believed Mr Blume gave Yarra Trams an undertaking to desist from inappropriate behaviour.
"Yarra Trams has assured me that it is continuing to investigate," he said.
"I would have very serious concerns if any inappropriate activities continued because the Coalition Government views safety on Victoria's public transport as incredibly important."
The Herald Sun emailed Mr Blume on Monday but he did not respond.
The same day he restricted his Twitter profile to followers, but the offensive images remained open to all on Twitpic.
