credit cards. eep.

i was hoping i could get some recommendations from others about credit cards. i'm currently a full time university student and am heading to chile in december for a bit of a holiday and to enjoy the glutton lifestyle. now, while i have enough money saved to last me the trip i would still like to have one as backup and for when i get back and,well, for buying crap off the internet.
i only really need a pretty small limit and should do ok for paying it off. i'm fairly clueless about it all and have been looking at different bank websites but would really appreciate any tips from others particularly of who or what to avoid and what i should be looking for.
