This past Friday - well, no, the 21st, I was coming home from with David and Alex from Jeremy's company picnic on I-95. I got into the right lane to take my upcoming exit. I was just going along with traffic, when the cars in front of me came to a sudden stop. I slammed on my breaks to stop, but they felt like they were locking up, or really just like I was going to spin if I kept pushing them.
This was NOT good!
Soooo...now I could either rear-end the white pick up in front of me, or I could swerve over and miss him.
I chose to swerve to the right into the curb lane. I'd hoped to be able to just slow down in there, but I over turned and smacked the front right of my car in to the concrete barriers. The hood popped up, and the battery just about popped all the way out. the whole front end of the car was kind of skewed to the left ( if you're in the car), so the front driver's side door wouldn't open. The guy I didn't hit stopped to see if we were okay. There was actually a news van behind us that was going to that area of the freeway to do a story on how dangerous that stretch of road is too (apparently there was a 6-car pile up there earlier) He said my car went up in the air quite a ways when it hit. He was pretty sure he was going to find very injured people inside. Thankfully, we were all okay - i meant just bruises and seatbelt burns. The impact startled Alex, who started crying and David seemed pretty calm given the circumstances, asking, 'Mom, what happened?"
"We got in a wreck."' I answered.
"We got in a wreck! Oh no!" ( Crying and panic.)
I am somewhat embarrassed that my first thought after we stopped was to worry that Jeremy was going to be mad that I wrecked the car. I wonder if that would have been different if it had been more serious. We all walked away with just bruises and seat belt burns. (Well, I walked away with back problems and and un-curving neck too, but hey, I hit the wall at about 60 mph!) Strangely, enough that news anchor was already on the phone with NHP (Nevada Highway Patrol) so an officer got there quite quickly. He also called the tow company, gave a witness account and let me call Jeremy to come get us. (Thankfully, he was on his way home too.) Great guy, really. He wondered if I'd want to do an interview about it, but then decided against it. I wouldn't have cared, but they did get footage of our car getting towed :)
I've decided that I definitely do have an angel or something that drives with me though. I've had too many close calls and this could have been SOOO much worse. If the car had fishtailed, or anything else, David could have been seriously hurt, being on the passenger side. Part of our bedtime routine is singing the Angel Lullaby from My Turn On Earth. The chorus talks about being guarded by our angel friends and I got pretty teared up sing that to them that night. My babies could have been hurt very badly. I'm so grateful we are all pretty much fine.
Angel Lullaby
Words: Carol Lynn Pearson Music: Lex de Azevedo
You came from a land where all is light
to a world half day and a world half night.
To guide you by day, you have my love,
To guard you by night, your friends above.
(Chorus)
So sleep, sleep, till the darkness ends,
guarded by your angel friends.
So sleep, sleep, till the darkness ends,
guarded by your angel friends.
There's one stands softly by your bed
and another sits close with a hand on your head.
There's one at the window watching for the dawn,
and one waits to wake you when the night is gone.
kids,
car wreck
