Home improvement a-go-go

Sep 03, 2009 10:54

I frightened Hubbyfink with all sorts of wild ideas about home improvements yesterday. There were quick calls and voicemails throughout the day consisting of "Oh! We could do this!" and "Ooh. We need to check this first, though." His coworkers concluded that I must be very bored at work. Not really; I'm simply putting off the work I don't want to ( Read more... )

Ya want some? We've got some parquet offcuts left over from re-flooring the master bedroom... ;->

Tell him that he's lucky to be married to you. My sister can't go anywhere without coming back home and finding out that her husband did some remodeling (major or minor) to the house in her absence. They are both architects, so you can imagine how that goes. She just rolls her eyes at this point.

I don't think I would mind coming home to completed remodeling projects. :)

I think he's imagining that I'm going to fall into some problem mid-project and whine at him on the phone while he's away in Wisconsin. Seeing as how I did exactly that when I painted the living room orange and ripped out the electrical outlets the last time he was at WAMW, I can't blame him for expecting the same behavior. *sigh*

And that is why I could NEVER have married an architect - I would have to redo all of his remodeling projects!

Then again, the Navigator and I both have enough ideas to keep us in home improvement projects for years . . . .

Geesh, what is with men anyway? I mentioned to Matt the other night about my plan to pull out the old heating registers, and he looked at me with fear in his eyes. I promptly got a laundry list of reasons why that we couldn't do it, etc...

You'd think that as a son of a carpenter that he'd be a bit more adventuresome in home improvement!

Oh my gosh, I forgot the heating registers! They are so awful upstairs. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't get it either. Oh well, we'll eventually get things the way we want them. :)

I figured we could do this ourselves. I want to replace the carpets in the bedroom, and probably on the top landing, but I don't want the carpet on the stairs anymore. I thought we could cut the carpet just underneath the landing and staple that bit underneath the landing. We rip up the carpet, rip out the tack strips, patch holes on the risers and paint them a glossy white. We install oak treads with a little glue, some nails and a touch of wood filler here and there. Bada boom, bada bang: new stairs!

Scott thinks it'll be a harder process. I'm just going with my gut; I haven't researched yet to see how difficult this will all be. He's talked me into saving this for cold weather and we'll paint while it's nice enough to have all the windows open.

I don't want the carpet on the stairs anymore.

How will the kitties handle that? I didn't want carpeted stairs, either, so we had the stairs refinished at the same time as the downstairs floors. Unfortunately, the Original Things couldn't cope with bare stairs (after slipping and falling a few times, Original Thing One stopped trying and would just stand at the bottom of the stairs and cry :-(), so we ended up installing a cheap expendable runner on the stairs and upstairs hallway.

They should be okay, especially since they can retract their claws and use the toe pads for traction. If not, we'll put a runner down.
