michaelandbrian CowLip keep saying that the ending would have been different but the political climate changed it.
As I see it there are three possible endings:
1) The one we got, Justin off to NYC, Brian dancing alone and Michael/Ben together in their happy little home. Well, they wouldn't have said that this was a different ending in that case.
2) B/J happy ever after. Well, this is a possibility but it doesn't make sense. How would B/J being together be affected by the political climate? It would have been even more "public" friendly so there would have been no reason to change it.
3) Break up Ben/Michael and put B/M together. Now this is a real possibility. Ben/Michael was the couple that got all of the favorable publicity. Their wedding made all of the entertainment shows and even some news programs. If CL had planned on putting B/M together in the end they would have been forced to break up the couple that, on this show, stood for marriage and commitment. (The lesbians are minor, female characters and don't count.) In this anti-gay marriage climate they didn't want to do that. They wanted to show that gay marriages could be strong and steady, just like het one's, yet keep the free and single guy out there.
When words like "Brian escaped that kind of thing" is used by them in explaining the lack of B/J ending, it tells me how they looked at that pairing. That gives credence to my belief that B/J would never end up together was right, that it was always their plan to not end with them. I'm wondering if their original vision was to break up Ben/Michael and have Brian/Michael run off together ala Stewart/Vince. The current political climate made them leave Ben/Michael alone.
