I mean evil in the wonderful
Crack Van sense of, "Can I have more candy, pretty please?"
What road did fanfic start you on? I'll just say - slash. If they made an embarrassment confetti to toss about it would've described my initial reaction perfectly.
What about the characters? Is there any fanfic that caused you to fall into or out of love with a character? Some surprise insight that made you nod your head and say, Yes, this.
Oh man, it occurs to me that I could go on a lot about this topic.*
Shall we start with Stargate Atlantis? My David Hewlett love and already being familiar with McKay made loving Rodney a shoe-in. Major John Sheppard, I eyed with more criticism. Pretty? Duh. Charming? Absolutely. But I needed to see what the writers and Joe did with his character. Fanfic jumped on that bandwagon with a vengeance and I'll just say, 'Wheee!
In the show itself, John became a keeper (for me) the minute he calmly and brilliantly managed Rodney with the now infamous Seven hundred and twenty line. Had he lost his temper and yelled.... Thank goodness that didn't happen. But I digress.
The character love I absolutely blame fanfic for is Mycroft and Lestrade of the BBC tv series. Specifically Mycroft/Lestrade.
Much like John and Rodney, they're older, wiser characters that have been around the block a time or two. Not at all what you'd consider a match in temperament or experiences but, by god, the fanfic writers make it work. How the hell do they do that?
For the insight part of this discussion, I'm leaving you with a link to a short Travelers fic
Decision Matrix by Thingswithwings.
I read it and immediately realized, this feels exactly right for this character.
Travelers is one of the best Team shows out that no one's watching - until they do. I'd give it just a Sense8 level of violence, at least in the first episode so be forewarned. (my deepest apologises to
tangotabby for not properly warning you. The show is on Netflix and should be starting season three soonish.
*This is the kind of thing we talk about at
