THE RULES:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.*
2. I'll respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the completely honest answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions
*I'm changing this rule -- You have to actually say you're up for this. I don't want people hesitating on commenting/questioning my answers because they'd rather not become part of a meme chain.
1. Best Muppet movie?
Such a difficult question! I think there are many contenders, but The Dark Crystal is definitely one of the best. It was the most original story, written by Jim Hensen. The creatures completely fascinating. And there was so much innevation in style and how far one could manipulate a puppet. They used actors, dancers, mechanics... anything they could think of! Even circus people on stilts! They are coming out with a sequel next year. I can only hope it's as good!
2. IT people - hopeless geeks or mysterious wizards, and why do they always sigh heavily, especially when you tell them that you can't open a Excel spreadsheet from the remote desktop because it's trying to pull data off some weird database on the server?
2 part question... sneaky! We are mysterious wizards. Our ways are only known to a few and though we try to share the knowledge, for most people it simply slides in one ear and out the other. Hence the sigh. We are a cursed race. Our secrets only to be known to a few, and though not heavily guarded, forever cursed to fall upon deaf ears.
3. How did you meet your husband?
College. Got my BAS and MRS... well, not really. The MRS came later. We were RA's together. Couldn't stand each other. He thought I was loud and blonde and I thought he was judgemental and a jerk. Throuhgout the year, as we worked together, we found we had things in common and were 'kind of' friends. The next year, he left earlier than I did and I saw him his last day, then heard nothing from him for 2 years until I got a letter in the mail. His dad had cancer and it got him thinking and of all the people he knew, he thought of me! We emailed, a week later I went to his parents' house (I'm a good girl I am!), three months later we were engaged! 11 months after that, married. Remind me some other time to tell you how he proposed. :) THAT's a good story. Maybe I'll put it in a book one day if I ever write something set in the current time period.
4. If you had a choice of any 3 authors (except me!) to invite for lunch, who would you go with?
But you were my number one choice! Besides, we already have a standing tea waiting... but someone else? Hmm... *assumes Pooh Bear stance* Think, think, think. Think, think, think.
1. Anne McCaffrey- she is the first fantasy novel I ever got in to. My father gave me the Dragonriders of Pern (the 1500 page trilogy) and after finally opening it, finished it in a week! After that, I devoured all of her books. The only books of hers I haven't really read are the majority of her romance novels. I've basically covered the rest. I admit, I had to go totally freaky fan and then would want to sit for hours just talking about her life and where she gets her ideas from. I think I would die a little death if she read something I wrote... i just to dream as a teen about writing with her or her mentoring me. *sigh*
2. Wen Spencer- her ideas are some of the most unique fantasy I have ever read. I'm serieously impressed by the weird things she comes up with. And she has a great sense of humor. It would be fun to talk about her life experiences and how that's influenced her writing. And maybe try to get a sneak peek at whatever she's working on now. :)
It's getting harder to choose now...
3. I'm torn between Brandon Sanderson and Diana Pharoah Francis. My reasoning:
Brandon has an English education and has written one of the most well-written fantasy novels I have ever read. Not to say that I don't adore many others, but it was amazing! I have read some of his blogging about his process and thesis that he wrote for college but it would be fun to get to really speak with someone new to 'the business' and his current experiences.
Diana has also written an amazing trilogy which I put up there with the same feeling as Anne McCaffrey (that says ALOT), but she's not just educated in English, but teaches it! And I always felt that I did well in my creative writing classes and would love the opportunity to learn from her and get pointers and ideas. As I try to seriously start writing good works to submit, I am trying to learn more. My education was in Russian and International Studies. If I had the opportunity, i would go back for English, so this would feel like a step in the right direction.
Diana- you wouldn't be willing to do an email course, would you? Or just email me some course information? I could pay you? I'll buy 20 more copies of your first book and give it to everyone who I know who likes fantasy... :)
5. Please go to the fridge. Look on the top shelf. List five things there.
Well, I'm at work, so which fridge? We have 5 right now b/c we just bought two big shiney stainless steel ones but the old ones are still up. It's very exciting. The office is abuzz. So, without looking, here's my guess as to what is in there:
1. someone's lunch
2. someone else's lunch
3. someone's lunch
4. my lunch (though I think that may be the second shelf)
5. and... someone's lunch
