"I'm going out!" Melanie called just as she threw her handful of Floo powder into the hurriedly-lit fire. Before anyone in her household had time to make an objection (not that she would have paid them any attention anyway), she stepped into the green flames and called out her destination.
Moments later, she stepped out of the fireplace in the back of the Leaky Cauldron. She took a moment to wipe some dust off her denim mini, grumbling to herself about not being able to use magic outside of school, and how it would be so much easier to get rid of that damn soot if she could just use her wand.
Not wanting to spend any more time than necessary in the crammed little pub, she hurried towards the front door and walked out into Muggle London.
A quick walk and a few blocks later, Melanie was surrounded by a various array of shops and stores, and she was in a better mood than she had been in all week. She walked into the first interesting store she saw and started picking through the racks, looking for particularly appealing pieces.
