Stuff I've read and watched.

I'm trying to catch up on RL things while recuperating. Taking breaks by rereading seanan_mcguire's Rosemary and Rue. S, I might finally post my thoughts once I'm done. Mea culpa. :-)Though, my rereading it this soon might be taken as an indication that I really, really liked it. But, as a long-time reader of crime fiction, I might have some tiny issues. After ( Read more... )

Ah. Yes. Sometimes, to be able to sink into something can be a very good thing, indeed. Of course, thickness isn't always a good indicator. But I'm happy that it worked for you. :-)

Heee. Sometimes, "tackle" seems to be the proper word for it. I like Lord John, too. In fact, I like all the main characters. :-)

Just before Echo in the Bone came out, I reread everything (for the second or third time) and I get more out of it each time. The first time you read the books, you're just desperate for where the plot is going, but subsequent readings let you enjoy the historical detail which is very good. The Fiery Cross is a meandering read but once you know the plot, you can relax, I find. It's also interesting how, at ground level, revolutions aren't particularly nice or idealistic. Jamie are Claire are pretty much pragmatic, and all about surviving ( ... )

I know, the historical detail is what really speaks to me. But yes, revolutions are real and messy. And, yes, the pragmatic nature of survival is another thing, though as ayinhara said below, Jamie and Claire sure seem to be in peril a whole lot.

Lord John is quite reserved, that is true. But on the other hand, he has excellent reason for being that way. And yes, of course Claire is fabulous. Sometimes she seems a bit too capable, but at other times we see her flaws, especially through Roger's eyes, I think.

Yes. Me too. And yes, I really like Jamie's and Grey's friendship. :-)

Haven't actually read it yet, though I intend to at some point. Mostly, I'm nursing a healthy scepticism when it comes to hyped things. Also, the man was a commie, more or less. Kind of allergic to those. And, he lived with a woman for ages, but they didn't get married supposedly because he was afraid that his enemies would try to get to him through her. So, when he died, his brother and father inherited everything since he didn't leave a will. Huge to-do. Also, rather stupid, because really, finding out that people are living together even if they're not married COULDN'T BE THAT HARD!

Yeah I can understand that being in the same country as, and knowing too much about, an author could be off-putting. Nevertheless I'm really enjoying the books very much, and am on to the third. I'm not familiar with the nuances of Scandinavian politics and culture, but I don't get what I would understand as a communist sensibility in his stories - he certainly hates thugs/bureaucrats etc who are stupid and vicious towards women...

I have a strange reaction to the Outlander series. I liked the idea and the combination of sci fi and historical fiction. The books are certainly addicting. Now the but. I stopped at the end of the third book because I got tired of the perils of Pauline plots. How many times can Claire or Jamie be in deadly peril and need to be rescued? I read one of the Lord John books. I guess I'm not as much of a Lord John fan as is Gebaldon.

Hee. Well, they live in interesting times. ;-) And stuff tend to happen around them. But yes, I know.

I like him, but I do understand if he didn't speak to you. Then again, there are those who've only read his stories and don't want to read the main series...
