My nerves can't take the teasers on this show. Eek. This was gorgeously set, but then I've come to expect this from the show. I'm so happy. The basement scene was frightening; I could see it coming like a trainwreck ever since the puddle of water came into view. The boy was very good at the spastic shock movements. How do you prepare for something like that? *admires*
Inquiring minds want to know whether the police noticed the credit card fraud thing. Padalecki impressed me with the teary angst scenes; I really hope this was the point where everything loosened up for him, as frankly, I don't like watching actors I feel aren't up to par. And well, I grew up watching good quality European television and films. As others have remarked, the daytime tv crack was priceless. Hee. Also, how does the man manage to inhabit his characters so well? Through excellent make-up, true; but his inner adorableness shines through, somehow. Seeing as I'm a voice addict, I loved that thing he had going on through the episode. And while people have complained of the swiftness of the sickbed scene and the following phone call, saying that they come out of the blue, I felt that it was dead on. Very much in character for both Sam and Dean; Dean would crack jokes in that situation. But the utter exhaustion, and the acceptance of his fate shines through; Dean is an intelligent man and he knows that some things are inevitable. Well, they would be, if circumstances and his stubborn brother hadn't intervened. ;-) And Sam, so stubborn, refusing to let go; though he realises this might not be what his brother wanted, he can't feel sorry for saving him.
Obviously, days had passed; there are some limits inherent to the 40-42 minute format, you know.
Familiar wallpapers! See, the problem with road trip shows is that the location scouts can't make miracles with a limited budget. There are only so many sets they can use, after all… and they can't redecorate all the time.
That weather, and the climate in general, is part of why I adore the XF Vancouver years, and this show, too. Makes me feel right at home, it does. Most late autumns and early springs are precisely like that over here.
It makes so much sense that Dean's a sceptic, he knows what's out there, and what he knows, he can do something about. (Also, JA is very cute being all petite 6'1 and grouchy in the rainy mud. I'm sorry, but each time I see them without an applebox I just want to pet the dear boy. And I feel weird about it for reasons which
marecagee knows perfectly. *misses her*)
So glad to see
Gillian Barber again! Her name was probably in the end credits, but well... *coughs* my copies don't have end credits. Still, I am an Old School XF fan as well as a trivia geek. I also recognised Kevin McNulty from the XF, and Rebecca Jenkins' face tickled my memory as well, but I haven't seen any of the things listed on her IMDb page, I don't think. My reaction to Julie Benz was actually just... huh, there she is, doing human Darla (which admittedly, she does fairly well). Oh, she's far from the worst Jossverse alumnus, but really, that doesn't say all that much. Though I'd have loved to see her skate. And I loved the irony of Penny Northern Gillian Barber in a plot involving brain tumour. I do like that Leila wasn't healed, though.
Once again, I love the score. I've read complaints that Nebraskan Christian churches/cults wouldn't play blues, but that piano timbre was so achingly beautiful that I don't care (we have a piano like that, but it's been standing unused close to a cold wall in storage for too long, so it needs to be restringed). Also 1) never been to Nebraska (or the US, for that matter) 2) Agnostic, here. ;-) I must say that a tent is not the best locale to show off an instrument like that. ;-)
"God rewards the good and punishes the corrupt" Oh, really? And who gets to decide who's who? I don't fully understand how they chose whom to heal. Sue Ann finds deserving people corresponding to those she's decided needs killing? But... how? Does it matter how the victims die? Maybe I shouldn't think too much about that, hmm?
People have likened the Reapers to the Gentlemen from BtVS Hush, but well... unless you want to go all Seventh Seal (which is close to my heart for obvious reasons), or Discworld, this is exactly how I'd picture Death. The Jossverse is not the be-all and the end-all of everything, you know. ;-)
How does Padalecki manage to crawl through small windows like that?
Watching people run in mud is rather funny.
Contact lenses!
Pretty, pretty, talented angst!
Route 666
Hmm. Well. Actually, I'm kind of fond of The Flying Dutchman legend; have even seen Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer. (
Samples on Amazon's German page) A phantom truck is no more bizarre than the rest of the cases, IMO. And in case my glaring obviousness somehow has failed to come across: I watch for Jensen Ackles' acting, not primarily for plot. Not feeling 100% comfortable with doing sex scenes with someone you just met does not have to mean that the actor in question plays for the other team. It might, but really, that's none of your damn business. It could just mean that the actor is an intensely private, shy person. I think... Dean is perhaps more in love with the idea of reciprocal love, than the actual thing, as he must have had trouble opening up to people long before he met Cassie. I do believe he was very infatuated with her, as well as really attracted, but I'm not sure if it was real love. But what is real love anyway? And really, we're not given enough scenes to find out about what's so special about her. But, it's not as if we know what was so special about Jess, either. Is it? And well, JA having more chemistry with his costar than the guest star is not that odd to me. Also, he's said in interviews that he thinks lovey-dovey dramas get kind of cheesy... and he strikes me as a fundamentally honest person. Watching him in other roles, I know that he can have excellent chemistry with actresses./rant
I actually liked Megalyn Echikunwoke, and I remember her from some other roles. Some things felt rather stilted, but I can handwave that with 1) her father having died just before 2) meeting Dean again and not knowing how to react. Please? While I can see her liking him, I don't think she likes him as much as he likes her, because she doesn't strike me as very romantic. And well, we all know that Dean is, don't we? He just hides it. I really liked the confrontation scene, because it seemed so natural, with two skittish people hugging the walls. While I do think the sex scene was hot and well, mmmJensen, I can't help feeling it was a bit unnecessary. And I also feel for the actors. Some people say that JA was wooden in the next scene; once I again I think people are unable to differentiate between the character and the actor. Dean is uncomfortable, but playing him that way doesn't mean that he doesn't act.
Though I have to say that I can tell Kathleen Noone is a daytime soap actor. Oy. And that subplot is not the best executed thing I've ever seen. Of course, my living conditions are so vastly different that I don't think I can approach it the same way as most US viewers can. An interesting thing about this episode was the way it handled communication and the lack of it. First, Cassie's mother and the three men and the mayor kept a big secret, and Dean kept a secret from his brother. Second, the act itself, of speaking but not understanding each other, is being addressed directly more than once. Yay, language! And, of course, we have the body language, which JA is so very good at. I'm glad to note that JP is getting better, too. :-)
Still loving the score. The ducks! The seagulls! And the foghorn! Yay! And the masts, chiming. Why yes, I live by the coast, why do you ask? ;-) Would you really hear crickets in November-December April, though?
Good sibling vibe, as ever. Padalecki played the younger sibling really, really well. Hee! *is content* Really, you'd do anything for your family, even sacrifice your happiness. I would, and have; so that loving smile at the end was so natural. Thing is, Sam seems to have a few lessons to learn on that front. Dean wouldn't keep that big of a secret from someone he (thought) he loved, because well, honest. He lies when he's impersonating agents to get the work done, but not about other stuff, and that's partly why I love him so much.
