On a day when the Delhi High court passed a verdict on the
Priyanka Matoo case I dont know whether to feel happy about "finally justice was done" or sad about the fact that justice took 10 years ...
My faith in Indian administrative services & now for sometime even in the judiciary has been constantly falling.
Law enforcement, discipline & faith in the machinery are definitely not strengths that India boasts of.
In fact, I firmly believe that Indians are better fighters - fighting all odds to survive & do well, because of the circumstances prevailing in India.
In discussions about India vs China ... besides other factors like favourable demographics & language barriers, a point that I often make is :
In India, innovation happens bootom up, fighting all possible nuisances & competitors
while in china its top down.
Hence the chances of survival & sustenance of innovation in india are much higher ...
I guess these challenges are supposed to make us stronger & better ...
Back to the state of law ..
Most lawsuits I have followed have dragged on for 3-20 years. Be it cases of high profile prople or high profile cases like the Best Bakery.
Yes, there have been verdicts .. but 5-10 years after the crimes.
Thats long enough for a lot of things to change.
Here is a feeble attempt at describing the
psyche of my brothers & sisters (indians). (Like all generalisations, it doesnt apply to everyone & definitely not to most of the readers of this journal)
Good intent is synonymous to stupidity & good acts are perfect reason for suspicions of an ulterior motive.
Wrongdoers do well, law-abiders pay for abiding the law.
Be it the car which overtakes everyone waiting for a signal by going onto the wrong side of the road & hence will cause a jam which wont clear till he is let through,
or the guy who's willing to pay for getting a license without the test, while good drivers are flunked by the examiners for stupid reasons ....
There are numerous reasons ..
I to have been guilty at times .. but logic sometimes takes over & good intent vanishes.
Ok the intent is not there .. may be the fear of the law will make people do the "right" thing.
But ...
Breaking a law is easy .. I wont pay for it .. at least not for a few years, and even then I can pay it off rather than paying for it.
This is what makes me most anxious.
Another
news report that some channels are carrying is about a company moving out of the country because the court gave bail to their employee who stole data.
Its going to take a lot for people & companies to feel safe in India.
Somewhere inside me .. there is a little fear .. which will be hard to erase.
