I just saw Serenity last night. Now, I normally don't talk about movies in my blog, because frankly, there are hardly any good movies anymore. Just about everything has been done. Nothing is really original in this day and age, and Serenity is definitely not an exception. So why am I writing about this movie you may ask. You definitely have the right to ask.
Serenity is actually based off of, or rather the continuation to a short lived television series which went by the name of Firefly. You probably never have heard of it. I know I have never heard of it until I saw the movie trailer. The reason for this being it was aired on FOX and had an amazing timeslot during primetime at 8pm on Fridays. Who the fuck watches television on friday? It should also be known this show aired the same year as Family Guy (2002-2003). In typical FOX fashion, the show was broadcast in episodes out of order and then terminated before the season was half over. As a result, 11 episodes were aired (in random order) and 3 left unaired.
I borrowed the DVD of the series from Anand, and I was very fortunate to do so, for I saw the series in the order it was meant to be seen in. For a 14 episode show, I sure got caught in pretty quickly. The first thing I noticed was that it was pretty influenced by Star Wars. The main character has an undeniable likeness to Han Solo, the original Han Solo seen in 'Star Wars' in 1977. The one who shot Greedo first. (Unlike in the Special Edition where Lucas decided to soften him up and have Greedo shoot Han first.) Malcolm Reynolds, the captain of the Firefly class shuttle 'Serenity' (which also is very reminiscent of Han Solo's 'Millenium Falcon' seeing as it is also a piece of crap ship with many surprises) is everything the original Han Solo was but better.
A likeable character was a great start, and the supporting characters were equally as great. They weren't as heavily inspired by other characters as far as I can tell. But as I watched the 14 episodes I got to know these characters very well and almost to the point where they were a part of me (or this could just be because I watched a million episodes on a rainy saturday last week when I had nothing to do.) The series had a very abrupt ending that didn't even reach the point of cliffhanger. It just completely stopped. I am not sure how it happened but the series was continued in the form of a movie.
The movie wasn't heavy on character development but you are given a chance to get to know them at the begining of the movie. The characters are easily identifiable and many of them retained their personalities from the television series. The antagonist of the movie is not quite a Darth Vader figure, but something about him reminded me of him. It may have been his willingness just to kill without regret, or it may have just been his consistent cool. That and he had a sword. Unlike the show's very light and upbeat tone, the movie was very dark. Pretty much people were dying left and right. When one of the main characters of the cast was killed, for the first time ever while seeing a movie, I actually was upset.
This post is actually starting to suck in my opinion, but I feel it would be a waste just to close the window. SO I leave you all with an unfinished post. Maybe I'll fix it later.
