Reading: Career or not?

As the days pass and I remain unemployed I find myself asking some interesting questions. Being rejected for countless jobs can pretty much make you re-think your whole life. I mean you hear it all the time from other people. "Getting fired was the best thing that happened to me. It made me realize that that job wasn't my calling." I find myself in that strange crossroad now.

Perhaps I have been kidding myself all this time. Maybe education and library science isn't where I belong. Perhaps I have confused my love of books for something that should be related to library science and it is not. Maybe I love to read, but I don't love to be a librarian. I mean let's analyze this:

1. Do I like to read? Yes. I read a lot of things. Mostly only books that catch my eye or are part of some series or by some favorite author. I don’t have a list of books I need to read before I turn 100. I read to escape daily life, to resume a movie that I have the exclusive rights to.

2. Do I like to teach? No. I have proved this to myself on many occasions now. I am not a dynamic teacher or a thought provoking teacher. I tell you how it is and what it is, it’s up to you to run with it and create wonderful things. I do not like to teach. I find no love in writing lesson plans or even thinking about lesson plans. I do not like to be in front of a class. I always sat in the back of the room, and I don’t see that changing.

3. Do I like to discuss books to a nauseating conclusion? No. I read the book, I might or might not, discuss it with some dear friend who also read it. Mostly, “Which was your favorite scene?” or “What did you think about so and so?” I do not enter into complex discussions about the subject or the plot. I do not analyze the language or metaphors or that horrible questions: “What do you think the author meant with…?”

4. Do I read for entertainment? Yes. To me reading is like watching a movie. A movie that I direct, with actors that I pick and the ultimate, kick-ass special effects that never go out of style. My budget is unlimited.

5. Do I read a lot of bestsellers? Do I care to read a lot of bestsellers or current event books? No. Maybe in some other part of my life. Right now? No. I don’t even know what is on that list. I don’t care.

6. What type of books do I read? Fantasy, Mystery and Young Adult. There you have it. Nothing ultra thought provoking.

7. Do I enjoy creating programs to teach people? No. I might give suggestions, but again, I suggest you take it and make it your own and do the magic.

8. Do I enjoy recommending books to others? No. I might suggest to some friends, but as in: You absolutely have to read this book! No.

So maybe reading is a hobby and not a career for me. What do you think?
