It was my first full day in my new job, though and I wanted to make a good impression. Not that it mattered. My supervisor wasn't there. I got quite a bit done in the morning. After lunch was where it started getting dicey: I already had been feeling nauseous when I woke up, so after about fifteen minutes up, I went back to bed for 45 minutes and decided to take a taxi instead of walking in the snow flurries.
The nausea came and went all morning, as did the chills. Had soup at lunch and then got back to work. Just after two went to fax something to a teacher in Saskatoon. Fax machine was acting all old and grumpy, not that I can blame it, so I shortened my fax by 2 pages and changed the cover page to reflect that. After the bajillionth try, I steeled myself for one last fax attempt. I remember feeding 5 pages before the dizziness and heat struck, feeding the 6th page before the tingles hit the back of my neck and I don't remember feeding pg 7, although it made it to the stack of fed papers, so I must have got it started before I fainted, right?
Next thing I remember is lying on my back in the copy room with a fair amount of pain at the back of my head. I pulled myself up and checked my fax but whatever I checked didn't register. Then I stumbled to the receptionist's desk and she made me sit and sip some water. Eventually the heat went away and I had the chills again, the colour returned to my lips, and I went to the copy room. Aalkdjlkajd! The effing fax hadn't actually sent, despite all 7 pages feeding properly!
Went back to my desk and felt fine for a few minutes, then the smell of my lunch dishes made me more nauseous, so I went to wash them. I took care of a couple calls and messages, then started feeling dizzy again. So I caved, filled in accident report for the fainting spell and asked if the receptionist had a moment free to take me home.
So, here I am, bundled up and huddled up in my warm bed with a sore tummy and head.
Anyone have "first day on the job" disasters to share, so I don't feel like today was a near-total fail?
