Writer's Almanac

So I used to sometimes listen to The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor. And now that I can get the podcast I do that, since I'm nearly never at home in the afternoon to listen to the radio. I wouldn't say necessarily that it's improved my writing or creativity, but it has increased my appreciation of poetry. Especially free verse poetry. I really believe now that poetry is meant to be heard, not read. I think that's why I could never like it that much in school. I mean, we had to do recitations and all in school, but hearing fourth graders on a blow-off assignment is nothing like hearing someone who knows what he's doing. I think that if poetry collections were published as CDs rather than books, there would be a much greater appreciation of poetry in the public. I guess it is just out of tradition that they are considered a print medium. Except that, historically, recitation used to be a popular event for parties and larger public gatherings. I wonder when and why that changed.
