but i have this need for concussion fic, where Jeff gets totally smashed into the boards in the middle of the first period of a game. Basically, Eric has to be all stoic and Captain-y, but inside, his heart is aching and stomach is churning and his brain just keeps repeating the image of Jeff getting absolutely savaged, bouncing off the boards, and sliding across the ice, stopping only when he slid into the back of the goal net.
And not moving.
For, what felt like hours--and were far too many minutes, which ticked in time with Eric's heart and the infinite repetition of "Don't be dead: he's not moving. Don't be dead: he's not moving. Don't be dead..."--Eric COULD NOT move.
And when Jeff finally, finally, reacts, surrounded by trainers and linesmen, and Cam, the worst part is the utter confusion on Jeff's face when he tries to get his limbs underneath himself to get up off the ice, but they just keep flopping around and sliding out from beneath him.
Later, Cam's the one who tells him that Jeff just kept slurring that he was "all right," he was "okay," and that if "Cam would just stop holding his shoulders and head down on the ice, he could get up and finish the fucking game."
But Jeff can't get up, even with help, he's making less sense, and it's clear that they need a stretcher to carry him off the ice.
And Eric is completely useless: he saw Chad and Jay and Jussi and Tuomo going after Chara, slamming him into the glass, one after another, after another. He should be telling them to stop, because all they need is another bench-clearing, ten minute, brawl, posted on youtube, but...he just can't. All he can see is Jeff blinking blankly, gloves, helmet, and stick shoved aside by other people, and Cam holding Jeff's head, still, face close and frozen in concern.
Jeff went flying; you don't have to be a physics expert to understand that. All 6'9" of angry Slovakian is going to beat every inch of Jeff Skinner on a good day. Regardless of the fact that that was a completely legal check, all angles, replays and slowmos say so, no one is going to convince Eric that Chara going after Jeff was fair.
That Chara doesn't deserve enough minutes to warrant a suspension, enough to warrant a retirement.
They've got him in a collar, strapped to a stretcher: head, shoulders, chest, and legs and it's not until they got him down the corridor and out of sight, that Eric realizes that he has three of his best d-men attempting to pummel Zdeno Chara, and both benches brawling on the ice.
