Sara, Teresa, Eddie, and I walked down to the voting booths this evening for the Lansing city primaries. With the huge Virg sign on our corner-lot yard, it's no secret that we're a Virg household. I admire Virg for his compassion in making progress and defending the cities' residents... even when that compassion can become hot-headedness. (See one of his many FOX News interviews for a great example) And he has gotten a significant amount of work done for the city -- the CSO program is being sped up, roads are being rebuilt quickly (seen Saginaw and Oakland recently?), and he's got some great money-making ideas, like the parking ramp sale (which sadly didn't pass last year because of Carol Wood -- but there's always next year...)
I also voted for Jessica Yorko for our ward (4th). Jessica is heavily involved in some great community initiatives here, and is a big supporter of alternative transportation and the installation of bike lanes, etc. She's also in her 20's (though has plenty of experience), whereas everyone else running for our ward is like 90-something years old. We could use some fresh ideas.
Reading through the statements made in debates recently by some of the people running for council (and even some on the council), I've been amazed at how little some of them know about things they should. One woman currently on the council apparently wasn't aware that immanent domain can't be used for private development (after the 2006 voter initiative passed), and another proposed converting all the one-way streets into two-way streets in order to relieve congestion. Right... that's like saying you'll switch from tofu to bacon in the morning in order to relieve artery congestion.
