there's something oddly sublime about the smell of an apple. its fragrance of spicy yet sweet subtleties can be easily overlooked, along with its potent ability to drum up nostalgia.
while holding an apple the other day, i cupped in in my hands and brought it to my nose. inhaling, i could smell the orchards of my childhood, leveled to make way for malls and convenient stores. eyes still closed i could even smell the apples' meaty muscle and oily skin.
that's another thing: the skin. i forgot how oily the skin of the apple was; reminds you that this apple was once a living, prospering element of nature.
