What has it got in its pocketses? Lipgloss, mostly.

Oh, there is so much boring stuff that must get done at work today. Sounds like time for a meme! One of my favorites has come around again: What's in your bag? Timely, too, as I'd been meaning to tell you all about the adventures of Megilocks and the Three Bags.

I have, of course, a perfectly servicable bag. (Possibly more than one.) But, I explained to my budget spreadsheet, the one I use most has a simple cotton strap, which could easily be cut by nefarious pickpockets, leaving me penniless and stranded on my trip. Disaster! A new bag was clearly the order of the day.

First I tried a Tom Bihn cafe bag, darling of all the cool travel blog kids. Ugh! Too ugly! Too big! Too hard to get into! Off with its head! (Wait, wrong story.)

The second, the Jane Marvel Runaround, was too cute, but sadly also too flimsy for heavy use. Heartbreak! I nearly kept it for a bag-about-town, but then I looked at my budget again. Back it went!

But--happy ending--the third bag was just right! (Even happier ending: and on sale!). It's an Overland Equipment Donner bag, well-made and full of clever pockets, and much cuter in real life than online.

Eh. It's a brown bag.

But it has a whole organizer section under the flap, and secret side pockets for water bottles (or scarves or shopping bags or bananas or tiny cans of juice...our side pocket experiments are ongoing). So handy!

And after all that, the actual meme: via greenapricot: what's in my bag? Of course, you know how it is when you get a new bag with lots of pockets. This could be more accurately called: What isn't in my bag?

1. Take a picture of your bag
2. Now dump everything out and neatly adjust, and take a picture (no matter how embarrassing)
3. Talk about the items inside. Details!
4. Tag 6 people. Being the nosy type, hope your friends will play too.

Things that are usually in my bag: keys, flash drive, cheap sunglasses, envirosax shopping bag, stamps, wallet, little notebook, ipod, gum, pen (sharpie makes regular pens now! did you know? great joy!), thai food receipt (there's probably at least one in there 90% of the time), work keys, allergy medicine & eyedrops, lotion (some kind of hippie thing by Wella that smells amazing), phone, comb, mirror, excessive quantity of lipgloss (and these are only the ones that I need to have handy at all times...), various hair restraining devices.

Things that are usually not in my bag: checkbook (I only write one check a month, so this usually lives at the back of a drawer in my desk; every month I go through a little flaily scene in which I can't remember where I keep it); mini screwdriver set (my desk drawer at work falls apart every two or three days, so I keep these there for quick repair work, but I brought them home so I can install a new memory card in my netbook. I hope the drawer holds together until I get it done!); toothbrush & toothpaste (these also live in a drawer at work, but I stuck 'em in my bag when I scrubbed up before my dentist appt. the other day); black hoop earrings (so that's where they went); the aforementioned tiny can of juice.

Thing that should be in my bag but inexplicably is not: a book. I'm trying to get back in the habit of having a book on hand at all times, but I forgot to put one in when I dropped the last one off at the library. If it were here, it would either be The Bridge on the Drina or Another Fool in the Balkans. Pre-trip reading yay!

Whooof. Long post is long.
