a small bit from what I am working on today. This is from a draft of the first chapter and I am playing with first person pov, I don't know if the story will remain in 1st person or if I will change it to 3rd. Enjoy!
Adventures often commence unexpectedly, and mine was no different. It began with the sudden death of my father. As deaths go, his was not remarkable. He spent his final day of life much as he had spent most of his days, scribbling notes and peering into a microscope. He ate supper, went to bed, and did not rise in the morning. His man found him, quite ‘extinct’ as my father would have said, the following morning.
You must not suppose, by my impartial relating of the story now, that I was not grieved by his death, for I was. It has been many years though, since then, and time has lent the event that distance and impartiality which it gives to all such great occurrences.
As with all sorrows, however, there was something positive which came out of mine for it meant that my girlhood wish was to come true. I was to be carried to a far away land by a handsome stranger.
I was, at the time of my father’s death, almost nineteen years of age, and yet too young to be cast alone upon the world to fend for myself. Much as I should have liked it, it would not do. A suitable relative must be found to take care of me. My father had left no living kin apart from me, and my mother had seemed to vanish from the face of the earth. It was discovered however, that she had a living--albeit distant--relative. His name was Mr Miles Cheviot and he was to become my guardian.
