If my thoughts on season three episode one could be summed up in one word, it would be "puke!"
I was not shy about letting my disappointment with "The Magnificent Seven" be known as anyone who read my rant last week would know.
To sum up "The Kids Are Alright" in one word? Well, that would have to be "Squeeeeee!"
Yes, as my subject suggests, this episode brought us back all the things we love about Supernatural. It was classic Supernatural at its best. From the very start with the guy meeting his demise with the freaky "Self operating jig saw," to the Sam and Dean investigation of what's going down in Cicero? to the kickass fight with the freak of the week right through to the bitter sweet ending for Dean as he realises, yet again, that "Normal" can never be his life.
I gave Jensen Ackles a razzing last week for over acting, but this week, I am giving him accolades for playing his role with the skill and aplomb we've come to know and love from him. All is forgiven, Jens, I begin to understand that perhaps you were the victim of a poorly constructed plot, and a badly worked (by the writer: Kripke) motivation for your character. Please forgive me for beating on you?
Another stirling performance is given by Jared Padelecki this week as Sam discovers some interesting information about his Mom, and about the freaky buffy chick who showed up in episode one. Not to give too much away, but be on the lookout for where the demonic black eyes show up this week!
This episode epitomised everything I love about Supernatural.
Plot and sub plot, strike and counter strike, are all handled superbly by writer Sera Gamble.
Over all a well written, beautifully directed and excellently played piece of drama by all concerned.
Kudos!
