For those who are interested, an update:
I haven't posted anything since Penny left, because I half knew when I got talking to Steven (when he came to pick her up the other night) that she might be coming back to us. He's a nice guy, but very much into manly off-roading adventures (dirt bikes, trucks and motorcycles) -- and was hoping Penny would come along with him on his adventures. I cringed at the thought, knowing what a little lady she was, but dogs usually adapt to their owner's lifestyle. Up to this point, Steven's also only owned big burly dogs when he was growing up, and never raised one from a puppy (we think Penny Lane is about 6 to 9 months old).
When he took her, I said that she could come back at any point if he had second thoughts about adopting her, or if he thought she was too much responsibility. We've been talking all week, and he kept mentioning that his roommate was unhappy at having a dog (before he took Penny, he told me he'd talked to her and that she was fine with the dog being there - and, besides, he owns the house... she just rents a room from him [eyebrow]). I kept telling him that if it wasn't working out he could bring her back to us.
Finally, tonight, he said that he was too worried about what his roommate might do (let the dog out of the house, possibly treat the dog unkindly) to feel good about keeping her. This may be the case, but I suspect he just realized how much responsibility it is taking on a little life that depended on him.
So... Penny Lane will be coming back to stay with us for a while. We will find her a good, solid home this time... as we love her too much for her to go anywhere else. We hope to find a home for her before we leave for vacation in a couple weeks, but I don't think that will be a problem.
A dog like her only comes along once in a blue moon.
*For those of you wondering what happened with the possible original owners who lost her in the first place -- I finally got through to their machine two days ago and left a message saying I had info about the dog, and to please call me back. I've heard nothing back from them. Nada.*
