So here's a little rant. I think there should be qualifications for pet owners. And I think they should be fairly strict. There should be a set of standards that someone must meet to own a pet. In the state of Texas, animals are considered "property", not "dependants"... So if someone loses one, they can just get a new one. When we bring animals into our home they ARE DEPENDANT on us. If they are locked up in our house and we don't feed them they will starve. If you throw them outside, they may or may not find food. They are domesticated, some of them don't even know how to hunt. This is all besides the fact that our world is overrun by technology that makes it not safe at all for wild animals. There are diseases such as FelV and FIV that are contagions as well. I am terrified to send my cats outside without being on a leash because who knows what the cats out there have. I don't want my cat to get bitten by another cat and get Feline HIV. How terrible is that. And you KNOW there are many people who know their cats have diseases and let them wander around outside, easily able to infect healthy cats. Or we could even talk about those who don't care enough to get their animals checked out by a vet ever. I could go on for a while but I won't. That's the basic point. People are very negligent.
Anyways, what brought this on is the lost animals we have taken in recently. After the hurricane we had a lost pony for weeks before the owners stepped up. At which point they refused to pay for any of the care the pony had recieved in that time. A month ago we found a purebred, young German Shepard. He was never claimed. Two nights ago Chris and I took in a kitten. We were cooking dinner for our one year anniversary and we heard a screaming cat. It wasn't one of ours so Chris opened the front door. At which point a black kitten made a break for our door to get in, out from the thunderstorm and cold. In the morning I called all the vet offices in Baytown and had them make notes about the found kitten, put up signs in the apartment complex, told the office staff, called the pound and had them write a note, I put an ad in the Baytown newspaper... If anyone had lost their pet and wanted to find it, they would have AT LEAST looked to one of those OBVIOUS outlets to find their animal.. If not, more of them. We have had this kitten and had this information out for 24-36 hours. I just think it's absolutely ridiculous. And it infuriates me. People should take more responsibility for their animals. OHHH IT I AM JUST SO MAD PEOPLE do shit like this. Lucky for the kitten it is now going to a GOOD home. That this will not happen to it again.
If you mistreat your animal, fuck you. You should go to hell. You should treat animals like your children. And if not even that well, at least provide them with warmth, food, water and some love. Or else why the hell do you even have one??? Oh wait, there's a lot of assholes out there that don't even take care of their children as well as I take care of my animals. Well now I'm thinking that we should sterilize unfit parents.
Ok, I'm done. :-) Much love to those of you that are wonderful people!
