I find Mary a very difficult figure, probably because it's so hard to get at her under the layers of pseudo magic rubbish she gets lumbered with in lots of Catholic culture. I find Julian of Norwich's vision of her, and her relationship with Jesus very moving though.

Yeah the Brazil thing is heartbreaking. I cannot fathom what they think they are doing.

Your comment reminded me of a chapter in Lift Every Voice by Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz, in which she talks about the limited role of the bible in the religious lives of Hispanic women, and the importance of the saints, partially because their representation, identity and interpretation is not regulated by the authority of the church, in the same way as Jesus and scripture are.

Once in El Paso, Texas, an old woman was asked whom she prayed to in time of trouble. She said she prayed to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the name people of Mexican extraction give to Mary. Asked why she did not pray to God, she looked up, smiled, and said, "God is a man and he does not understand women's problems ( ... )

I suppose that I am partly hesitant about Mary because of the use of her to oppress women in lots of Western culture, certainly in Irish culture. Our lady of Gaudalupe does not seem to have that baggage, although I know very little about her really.
