Finally! Gacked from
lkk, who gave me the letter B.
I decided to split my answer into a list and commentary.
The list:
1 - Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
2 - Band on the Run - Paul McCartney & Wings
3 - Bolero - composed by Maurice Ravel
4 - Blackbird - The Beatles
5 - Bye, Bye Love - Roy Scheider & Ben Vereen, All That Jazz soundtrack
The commentary is
1 - The Anthem. I love it with all the madness in my soul. The bravado, the Jersey shore ambiance, the fireworks, the fake ending, the true end where the vocals devolve into sounds rather than words. I do not have nor do I ever expect to have tattoos, but if I did I'd be tempted to go with "Tramps Like Us" on one arm and "Born To Run" on the other.
2 - Hmmm, more running. I like the quasi-nonsense lyrics like "The rain exploded with a mighty crash/As we fell into the sun/The first one said to the second one there/I hope you're having fun." I like the sort of story. (What is up with that judge and his grudge?) I especially like the energy. It's all helped along by that iconic cover photo guest starring James Coburn.
3 - I don't listen to classical music much any more, but this is my tribute to my past. The music is sinuous to me, and I defy anyone not to get caught up in the quickening tempo as the song moves inexorably onward. Well, except the little old lady who reportedly shouted "Rubbish" at the premiere. I also like the way the song was used in the film Allegro Non Troppo. (Hah! You thought I was going to say 10. That was okay, too.)
4 - I wanted to represent my favorite band, The Beatles, but their B's are not their strongest group. "Baby's in Black" did get stuck in my head as an earworm for a few days. "Because" is lovely, but I never learned all the words (quite possibly because some of them are in Italian). I certainly considered "Birthday" because it is full of energy, makes a nice
alternative to the usual "Happy Birthday" song, and always brings a smile to my face. However, I decided to go with "Blackbird" because of the semi-enigmatic lyrics ("Into the light of the dark black night") and because The Waterboys so nicely worked it into one of their songs. I also heard a smooth jazz version of it a week or so ago that was pretty nice too.
5 - Had to have a show tune so why not one on steroids? Felice and Boudleaux Bryant's song was already a classic as sung by the Everly Brothers, but it was transmogrified in the film. ("Oh, yeah!")
Besides it's inextricably linked with the "video" in my head of the film's grand finale. "Goodbye, my life, goodbye. Goodbye, my life, goodbye. zziipppp" Death doesn't get any better than that.
If you'd like to play the meme and come up with 5 songs starting with a specified letter, leave a comment asking for a letter.
