Rachel Alexandra is definitely a Super Filly and is on track to be Horse of the Year. Yesterday she won the Woodward Stakes, the first filly ever to do so. This also means she has not only beaten her own age class handily but also older male horses. She had to work a little harder to do it. The first quarter was, shall we say, brisk (although the overall time for the race was moderate), and she only won by a head. Considering that she's won by as much as 20 lengths, she was pressed a bit.
The jockies had no doubts, though. Calvin Borel said, "I knew she wouldd never let him go by." Robby Alverado, on the second place Macho Again, said, "I never thought I had her."
The only bar I can see to her getting Horse of the Year honors is that she may not run again this year--well, she deserves a rest--and someone could do a spectacular job in the Breeders Cup Classic. However, no other horse has dominated like she has, so I think her chances are good to excellent.
Note to my FL: I had the second round of laser eye surgery on Friday, and I'm a little, ok, a lot, behind in reading, but I'll catch up eventually.
