More death...

This morning I found out a guy I went to university with died suddenly overnight Thursday. I learned about it on Facebook, which was a bit odd, but better to learn it that way than not at all, I suppose. It still seems rather surreal...especially since someone has logged into his MSN account, so he appears online.

If it weren't for the fact that there's an obituary in the paper, I could have believed it was some big hoax. An odd one, but in this day and age, well, not much surprises me any more.

What gets me is how many people I know have been visited by Death recently. It started with Shawn (the Snowbird) in May, then on August 12th, Tim, one of my co-workers, lost a fight with cancer very suddenly, and now Ian. With Tim at least we had a couple of weeks to come to terms with things. He'd been winning a battle with prostate cancer, we thought, but he started having back problems at the beginning of July, and after running some tests, they discovered the cancer had metastasized and spread throughout his body. He was dead in less than a month.

I guess it really started at the beginning of 2007 when one of my former housemates' sister died, but these last three have just been so close together...

Someone tried to tell me that as I get older, more people I know will die since they themselves will be older. But these people were not old. Kristen was 21, Ian was 23, Shawn was 32, and even Tim was only 52. I know we are not immortal, but we've been set up with such an expectation of a long life that these sudden deaths are rather shocking.
