work etc

I just got done with my first week of work. I've been going through training so far, though it's mostly been an opportunity to build a network with everyone else who's joining the firm this year. I really like all the people I'll be working for and working with.

I find out on Thursday who my clients will be. There's a possibility I might be assigned to the ADB account. My firm manages their staff retirement plan, among other things. The same retirement plan that my mom gets money from. There's something satisfying in knowing that. Throughout training they emphasze that you should never forget the client and never forget who we're working for. A little hokey, but truer than at most wall street firms.

I've been surprised at the amount of emphasis they place on ethics. It seems paramount to the firm. It is very much a trust based business and one bad apple can destroy the brand.

I took the Chinatown bus to DC this weekend with a friend. In fact I'm on the Chinatown bus right now on the way back to new York. The buses really vary in quality. The first bus that we got on had a very strong smell of urine. Thankfully we had gotten on the wrong bus. That was apex. The better bus was eastern. Right now I'm on the tony bus and it's the best so far.

Definitely don't bother buying tickets beforehand. For one thing it doesn't secure you a spot on the bus unless you arrive half an hour before the bus departs, when the bus is empty anyway.

DC metro is so good. It's amazingly clean and they have electronic displays that show when he next train is king to get there. It's too bad the NYC subway isn't more like it. Then again, the mta is cheaper. It's too bad those dumbasses in Albany didn't pass the bloomberg traffic plan.
