I just got done watching MTV's "True Life: I'm moving to NY" and it really pissed me off. They did it on 4 people: this girl working in fashion, this wannabe model from Wisconsin, and this guy and girl from I'm not sure where. Well, the model guy was a moron. He moved there with $300 in his pocket and moved into an apartment for $150 a week that his modeling agency provided. Each time he had a meeting with a potential client for a job, he was late. One time, he fell asleep at a restaurant and missed the interview all together. Then he was going to be able to go to Italy for a fashion show but couldn't leave the country because he had a warrant for his arrest in Wisconsin. He ended up doing a shoot for CosmoGirl in Central Park, and he was smoking a cigarette and threw it down on the ground, and one girl on the shoot basically chewed him out for that. So now he's living back in Wisconsin because he was arrested. The update of him said, "Josh is still living in Wisconsin and is collecting cans for income." Can you believe that?
Ok, the other girl moved up there to work in fashion, though I'm not sure what exactly, and she got an apartment with her friend. Her half of the rent was $1325, and her parents paid $1000 of it and she had to pay everything else. After 2 months of living there, she had to call her parents for money because her electric bill was $500. Her dad said he'd help her, and right after, she's in a store shopping because her aunt gave her $1000 for graduation. She bought 2 things and spent $600, and afterward she said, "What would I save for? I'm not going to buy a house, I'm not going to buy a car, so why save?" Then right after, she was out partying with friends, spending $60 on drinks at a time. The update said her parents threatened to cut her off but are still paying for her.
The girl and guy were gay best friends, and they moved there and got an apartment in Brooklyn. They were the only 2 I didn't mind watching because they both went out, got jobs, and saved money for bills. I liked them.
I'm pissed about watching this show because they showed irresponsible people. They should've shown people who were doing it alone for a realistic purpose. People who considered how much that place costs, people who had no other means to pay for anything but themselves. They give people like me a bad name; like they were stupid for moving there and not realizing what it may be like and that it's going to take a lot to make it there. I don't wanna see a daddy's girl who can't pay her way, even though she doesn't really have to pay her rent. I don't wanna see a douchebag who is overconfident in his future. Be realistic people! Realize that going there with just a little money in your pocket is not going to cut it. Realize that most people don't have their parents to help them, but they're still gonna try. It makes me mad.
I guess I'm just annoyed because a lot of people don't support me on my decision to move up there because they think I'm seeing Friends and Sex and the City and thinking it'll be like that. I'm not dumb, I'm not naive. I know it'll be hard and that I may not succeed up there. I know that life will not be like sitting in a coffee shop with people I love. I know that I won't be meeting all of these men and going on extravagant dates. I just want to try to get a job damnit. I don't want to live like on a TV show. I just want to try to get a good job, and if I can't, then so be it. Stupid reality TV.
