Alright, so I thought I'd try my hand at writing a tutorial. This was made in Photoshop CS and uses selective coloring.

This tutorial goes from
to

Start out with the base layer.

Duplicate the base layer twice. Sharpen the second layer twice and set the top layer to Soft Light at 100%. I like to leave the original layer alone, so that I can duplicate it and use it again if I want to.

Create a new selective color layer on top by clicking the half black, half white button at the bottom of the layer window and clicking 'Selective Color'.
Settings:
Reds
Cyan: +17
Magenta: +36
Yellow: -7
Black: 0
Yellows
C: +14
M: +27
Y: -26
B: 0
Neutrals
C: +4
M: +14
Y: -2
B: 0
Basically, I'm getting the colors away from yellow and toward magenta.

Another selective color layer on top:
Reds
Cyan: -38
Magenta: -9
Yellow: +36
Black: -12
Yellows
C: -100
M: -3
Y: -35
B: +15
Greens
C: +100
M: -37
Y: +100
B: +100
Cyans
C: +100
M: +100
Y: -100
B: +100
Blues
C: +71
M: +100
Y: -100
B: -21
Neutrals
C: 0
M: +10
Y: 0
B: 0
This puts a bit more red into it, among other things.

Finally I added text and a border. The text is small caps Palatino Linotype at 1.6 pt (the image is pretty high resolution) with a tracking of 300 (the box one down and one over from the font size). The border is white, 1 pixel all the way around, set to an opacity of 56%.

That's all! Feel free to comment with icons made based on this - I'd love to see what you come up with. You're welcome to use the icon and base image to practice, but please don't post them as if they were your own.

I'd love feedback on this, it's the first tutorial I've made. Also please comment if you have questions, problems, or requests for other tutorials!
