Crossing Guard

Fifth grade started at a new school, a prgressive new idea new school. In that "new math" way, this grade school was supposed to be the wave of the future. I've never seen another built like it. But then, non child bearing, non teachers, how much do we see the inside of a grade school anyway?
As often as possible, the brick walls were rounded, walls were removed wherever necessary. Instead of a classroom, we had a pod. No really, they called it a pod. There was the lower pod, 1st thru 3rd grade, and the higher pod, 4th thru 6th. At the time, there was only one class per grade. However, there was a few extra fifth graders that year so the advanced students got to share with a few 6th graders. Yeah, I was one of the ones in the split class. Some other time we must discuss the value of calling some advanced, while others are what, underdeveloped? not good enough?
Being a brand new school, we got a lot of new things that first year. LIke brand new crossing guard garb. This included the reflective belt with chest crossover, hats, flags, and really good rain slickers! Man alive the crossing guards were exclusively the 6th graders. Only one year, but by that time, the belts were worn, the hats were scuffed, and the rain slickers reduced to less than three. But still, it was cool! I got to be at school early, and stay late. Mind you, the location of this new school wasn't in a busy, busy section of the city. Our main traffic was the parents dropping off or picking up. I don't know if kids are ever allowed to be the crossing guards anywhere anymore. I don't think we have any sort of crossing guards here at all.
