Cabin Weekend started one weekend in late July in 2005. The group was going to go camping: the first night was going to be me, Danica, Caitlin, Ben, Mike, and Mike's friend whose name I can no longer remember. (Erin and Chris were go We were going to go to Detroit Lake, but it was packed--no camping anywhere. So we met up at Mike's mom's house in Salem, and discussed just staying there for the night and deciding what to do in the morning. So I called Erin to tell her the plan and she said "Wait! I have an idea. We have a cabin up here where you guys could stay." I said I'd discuss it with the group.

The group loved the idea. We were all geared to drive a couple hours to Zigzag, near Mt. Hood, to stay for a couple of nights, so I called Erin back. She was concerned because she thought her parents might not approve a bunch of us college kids staying at the family's cabin, but she ended up talking them into letting us stay, reassuring them that we are responsible.

So we headed up. I looked up directions to Welches/Zigzag on mapquest, so I was the navigator. I sat in front in Ben's explorer, and Caitlin drove. Danica and Ben sat in the back. Mike and Mike's friend followed in another car. At some point, I was convinced we needed to turn off of Highway 26. (WRONG!) We followed this little road...it turned into a gravel road...it turned into a dead end...just a big, graveled area...with old school busses cut in half. (And they still haven't let me forget it, either.) In the course of finding our way back to the main road, Mike and his friend got sidetracked, thinking that another car was the car we were in, and so they followed them...right to their house...and sat in the driveway for awhile, because the people in the car didn't want to get out with a strange car following them and sitting behind them in their own driveway...finally Mike and friend called us saying "Hey guys, if we're here, why aren't you getting out of the car?" From there we figured out that they had been FOLLOWING THE WRONG CAR!!!

Erin had given us the number for the land line at the cabin, because there is no cell phone reception there. Unfortunately, she didn't give us the right number. So as we got closer to Zigzag (just past midnight) I called the number she gave us. Which happened to be some elderly person. Who was NOT happy with me for waking her up.

Since we had no clue where the cabin was, and the plan was to call Erin from the Welches Thriftway parking lot, but since that plan was ruined by us not being able to call her, we figured we'd hang out in the parking lot until she figured it out. Luckily, once we parked, (around 1am) we saw her there and followed her about a mile to her family's beautiful cabin. Downstairs was a large living room and kitchen and deck, and upstairs was open sleeping space, with many foam mats on the floor.

Some of the details of that first year are a bit hazy. I know that Chris showed up the second day and that G showed up the second night. Before it got dark the second night, Erin um...well you guys know. Hee hee. Let's just say she spent a lot of time in the creek.

2006 was a considerably smaller group. It was just me, Erin, Rich, Danica, Will, and Little Nick. (I believe Morgan joined us with her man at the time). Liam joined us the third night. The most memorable event is not to be recounted in its entirety, but let's just say that it had something to do with someone drinking a little too much "snappleclear" and going on a little late night stroll...and may have not been awake at the time.

2007 was a very large group. I know I'm going to leave out some people, but here's a start: Erin, Caitlin, Ben, Danica, Will, Kelsey, Chris, Kirsten, Morgan, Colin, Nick, and myself. Katie and Claire joined us the final night. Ben layed on the floor and gave us a monologue about the little Mexican boy named Bobby, who had a very powerful knife. there was some getting lost on the way to the river, and a lot of laying around at the river. Alltogether a very relaxing weekend.

Who knows what 2008 will bring...sometimes its madness, sometimes it's just togetherness, but there's always a strain of predictability and one of spontenaity.

It's Cabin Weekend. Anything could happen.

party like a rockstar, corvallis, friends, dixon lodge, osu, bonding, college, summer, love, good talks
