✖ CHARACTER:
Name: Tsubasa Hanekawa
Canon: Bakemonogatari (anime)
PB/Image: http://www.bakemonogatari.com/chara/images/i05.jpg
Info links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakemonogatari
Canon Point: Episode 12
Gender: female
Age: 17
Birthdate/Sign: July 18 / Cancer (non-canon)
She's protective and nurturing toward children (and under-achieving/unhappy classmates), very intuitive, helpful, and compassionate, and has a fantastic memory. And as the cat, she's definitely overpowering The lack of harmony in her home and family situation is a tremendous source of stress for her.

Tattoo:
About an inch in diameter, at the base of her spine (exactly where a cat tail would grow from if she had one).

Suitability:
As a high school senior, she's already less than a year away from 18, so there's not much more maturing for her to do. Bakemonogatari is also a series with more than a few sexual themes, and it's definitely something she and the other high school characters are fully aware of. She's not necessarily gung-ho about Exploring Her Sexuality, but isn't uncomfortable with it either--in general it seems that she's more than willing to try things given the right opportunity (at least when the guy she loves is involved).

She is also very responsible and capable; her parents have been far from the nurturing type for her entire life, and she has canon plans to spend a year or two abroad by herself once she graduates.

Power:
She's possessed by a cat spirit that manifests itself when her stress becomes too intense--in addition to the change in her personality, she physically transforms (she sprouts cat ears, and her hair grows longer and turns white) and has increased strength, heightened senses, catlike agility, and the power to drain the energy from others by pressing against them. She can't transform back until either the cause of her stress has bean dealt with, or she's sufficiently drained/weakened (by a vampire, in canon). Her transformations are crisis points in the series--they're uncontrollable and not at all a matter of course. I'M NOT REALLY SURE HOW THIS WOULD WORK IN ZODION TBH so maybe the cat spirit could be completely sealed away (except possibly during extra-special events or 4th wall stuff)...?

She doesn't retain any memory of her transformation and has no awarness of the cat's presence at this point in canon, and when the spirit isn't manifesting, she's a normal human with no powers. That being the case, I don't know if she's 'qualified' to gain a power here. IF SO THOUGH I'd want it to be summoning! (But IF NOT that's cool!)

She also gets increasingly intense headaches as the manifestations approach; at the canon point I've chosen, she's getting them frequently and is only one day away from transforming. As for handling THAT in game, I'd be okay with either her just getting headaches from time to time depending on her stress level, or with her not getting them at all in Zodion.

Personality:

Responsible, serious, and a brilliant student, Hanekawa's a favorite of her teachers; not only does she follow all the laws and school rules perfectly, but she scolds others when they aren't quite so conscientious. She'll disregard them if, and only if, there are some kind of extenuating circumstances; even then, she'll disregard only the ones she absolutely has to. When she's ditching school because of an emergency and meeting up with Araragi--who's also ditching school, because she asked him to--she won't let him ride his bike through the playground and makes him park it legally before they can talk. She overlooks the unlawful two-people-on-one-bike ride they make later, but admits that she's really quite reluctant to have to do so.

She's the class representative of their high school's top class, and her personality is ideally suited for it; Araragi refers to her as the 'class rep of all class reps' and muses in the novels that she might have been divinely chosen for that role. Her grades and knowledge are perfect to the extent that Hitagi Senjougahara (who is ranked #7 in their grade, with Hanekawa as #1) rather matter-of-factly states that if there's a test that Hanekawa doesn't get 100% on, it's probably because there was something wrong with the test.

It's not just the civic and academic spheres in which Hanekawa's performance is stellar--she's also calm, mature, honest, caring and kind (to classmates, children, and animals alike), with a tendency to befriend people in spite of themselves. Even after third-grade Mayoi Hachikuji, whom she'd never met before, told Hanekawa she hated her, she reacted by laughingly defusing the tension and continued to treat Mayoi kindly. In the novels' prequel arc, which hasn't yet been animated, she responded to Araragi's revelation that he was friendless to the point of not having a single contact in his mobile phone by asking to borrow it and then adding her name and number.

Apart from having the kind of book-smarts and study skills needed to obtain perfect scores on every exam (including P.E. and fine arts), Hanekawa also possesses an enormous range of knowledge on so many different topics that Araragi is frequently moved to exclaim that she really does know everything. (Her response is always the same: "I don't know everything; I just happen to know this.") She's well-informed about the backgrounds of her classmates, names and etymology, the location and history of various landmarks, and the proper way to discipline children. She's also perceptive and considerate, often gently pointing out the ways in which situations could be misinterpreted and offering advice on how to avoid giving the wrong impression or improve a bad situation. She has enormous presence of mind--even when she ditches school in the aforementioned emergency (specifically, suddenly sprouting cat ears), she manages to arrange everything optimally: she verifies that there's nothing in Araragi's class schedule that it's important for him not to miss before asking him to meet her, and makes sure that her own committee responsibilities will be taken care of by asking Senjougahara to handle them for the day. This request even serves a double purpose--Senjougahara's reputation had been suffering among the school faculty because of her lackadaisical approach to attendance and seeming loss of academic focus after she began dating Araragi, so having her take care of the class duties that day was also intended to help her restore some of her standing.

There's a little more to Hanekawa, though. One of the main reasons she knows so much is that she's always studying at the library, and the reason she's always at the library is that, except when it's absolutely necessary, she never goes home. (Of course she can't stay at the library all the time, so on Sundays and school holidays, she just takes walks. All day.) And the reason she never goes home is that her parents are emotionally and physically abusive. Due to a series of remarriages, neither of them is biologically related to her; according to Hanekawa, the only reason they didn't give her up for adoption was to keep up appearances, and they've always seen her as a nuisance. Her complicated family life is the reason she's always worked so hard to be a "good girl" who's beyond reproach. And while on the one hand it's good that she hasn't let her outstanding achievements go to her head, she doesn't seem to take any pride in them at all--anyone can study, after all. It's not that she has a self-esteem problem--along with pretty much everything else, her self-possession and poise are above average--but if she doesn't feel bad about herself, she doesn't really ever seem to feel particularly good about herself, either.

So, not to put too fine a point on it: she's stressed. It's stress that's been building up since before she started grade school. For all those years, though--until she finished her junior year of high school, and beyond--that stress didn't have anywhere to go. All it could do was keep on building up. On the outside, nothing ever changed, and on the inside, nothing was ever accomplished. Even after the remarkable experience of meeting Araragi, having her eyes opened to the reality of vampires and other 'oddities,' and becoming entangled in his symbolic fight to regain his humanity (not to mention his very literal fights against a legendary vampire and the vampire hunters who almost defeated her)... the pressure of her unhappy and discordant home life didn't change in the least.

In a way, it was her compassion that, in a way, saved her. At the start of the Golden Week holidays, she and Araragi came across a white cat that had been hit and killed by a car. With his help, she laid the cat to rest with a proper burial. Without knowing it, though, she'd been targeted by the oddity known as the 'Meddlesome Cat'; and at last, she had an outlet. First she was struck with debilitating headaches, but then she was possessed by the spirit of the cat. The personality that took over then was 'Black Hanekawa,' a wild and unrestrained monster whose nightly attacks on humans drained them of their energy--leaving her refreshed and relaxed, and them comatose. The first two victims were her parents. Thanks to the Meddlesome Cat, a form of dissociative identity disorder manifested itself for the first time and took care of Hanekawa's problems the way she'd never been able to as 'herself.' It didn't stop there, though, and even though she 'got better' in the end, nothing was permanently solved; the cat was defeated, but it didn't disappear, and Hanekawa became herself again full-time, but she lost every memory of the incident. And the cat came back--only two months later, this time inspired by the stress of watching Araragi (whom she'd loved almost since they met) fall for and start a relationship with Senjougahara. She wasn't only peripherally aware of the involvement, either, since she soon became Araragi's go-to source for discussion and advice regarding Senjougahara. That manifestation, too, was dealt with; but until either all the stress in Tsubasa's life disappears or she's able to acknowledge and accept the ugly, vengeful parts of herself instead of locking them away, the cat will never disappear.

She's just fine for now, though. She can handle this much--no problem.

✖ SAMPLES:
"Zodion" First-Person Network Entry:

[The young lady who appears on the screen is a new arrival! She looks fairly composed; after a glance at something on her own screen (a recording indicator, perhaps), she smiles warmly. When she speaks, her voice is light, but there's a slight trace of uneasiness.]

Uh-oh, am I recording? I thought I might be able to make a phone call, but it looks like that function wasn't quite what I was expecting. Ah, well!

I'm afraid I'm not sure whether anyone can see or hear this, but just in case--Good afternoon! I'm Tsubasa Hanekawa. [She shuts her eyes and inclines her head; one of her braids slips forward over her shoulder, revealing the cat-shaped clip dangling at its end.]

I can't say I've figured out yet exactly how I can be of help to you twelve, if you're listening, but I promise I'll see what I can do! And, of course, if there's anything anyone feels like telling me, I can't say I won't appreciate it.

Well then... Please treat me well. I look forward to hearing from you! [She takes a deep breath, then smiles again before shutting off the feed.]

"Zodionlogs" Third-Person Prose Entry:

Perhaps she had been too caught up in her thoughts, because Tsubasa suddenly became aware that she no longer knew where she was. Of course, she often walked with no particular destination in mind, but she couldn't remember the last time she'd actually lost her way; there was nowhere in the city she hadn't been, no area she shouldn't have known. No, this couldn't be a simple case of getting distracted and wandering too far; she replayed the immediately preceding few seconds over, considering, and concluded that something had definitely shifted. There was a change in the air (a slight difference in humidity and temperature) and in the quality of the light. It wasn't a concrete sidewalk under her feet, but dressed stone; these weren't the same kind of trees.

Sucking in her lips and keeping herself calm, she reached into her bag and took out her cell phone. No signal. That wasn't surprising; if she'd somehow moved to a different place--a different realm--then it would be stranger if she did have reception. She'd just wanted to be sure.

In any case, this had to be the work of a supernatural oddity. Perhaps she hadn't physically moved at all; she might only have been somehow transferred to another plane. Her perspective had been shifted, say. So then... She frowned, giving her surroundings a hard look. If it were an oddity, then she would probably need Araragi's help. Or rather, she would need Oshino's help, but she wasn't sure how to contact him without going through Araragi. Without a working phone, though, she couldn't contact either of them. Ah, but perhaps it was a proximity type; she'd gotten too close, but if she turned and walked away the way she'd came, things might go back to normal.

But she couldn't quite bring herself to turn and walk away. It was dangerous to get involved, she knew, but... she felt drawn to that strange pedestal. (It was an altar of some kind, perhaps.) She wanted to look at it up close, see what was inside the box... Besides, maybe it was already too late not to be involved. Maybe there wouldn't be any harm in taking a closer look.

The instant she stepped over the narrow channel of water ringing the pedestal, though, she realized with a wince that there must indeed have been harm in it. (Or perhaps something had just now coincidentally decided to bite her.) And the water was rising around her; it was happening too smoothly to be any kind of fountain mechanism she was aware of, and the reflection that appeared--definitely supernatural. The physics didn't make any sense. (She issued herself a quick mental reprimand for noticing *that* first, rather than the fact that her clothes weren't being reflected.)

Well, her clothes were missing in this image, but it also had something extra. There was a kind of glowing mark... exactly where she'd felt the sting. But what was it? A symbol... she narrowed her eyes, trying to focus.

A zodiac symbol. Cancer, if she wasn't mistaken.

But had that mark really appeared? Perhaps it was spiritual and not physical... She glanced around before tugging at the waistband of her skirt to check. (As though the possibility of someone seeing her look under her clothes was really what she should be worrying about now. They probably wouldn't be able to see through this magical water-ring anyway.) It was an awkward angle--she couldn't get a clear look at her tailbone. But something did look a little different. Or was it her imagination? It wasn't glowing the way the mark in the image did--the color was nearly the same as her skin tone, in fact. Almost invisible. But it did seem to be there.

The water fell. Whether it had already been too late before, she couldn't say; but by now, she had certainly missed any opportunity to turn back without getting involved. She opened the box.
