manga: Claymore Vol 14

Oh, Galatea…

This is a series where I really do need the rereads. I get too caught up in reactions the first time through to notice things. Like Galatea commenting about how people from The Organization had finally come for her. Sure, it’s because she let them find out about her so they’d send Claymores to help her fight the Awakened Being, but still, I think she kind of misses it.

And I love how she STILL turns the situation-only having Miata and Clarice-to her advantage. And worries about Miata in battle. Clarice does her best once she snaps out of “orders and now else,” but she’s outclassed on every side. Though, IIRC, the next volume is where that battle really gets good. And I’ll never get over being excited about seeing Sid and Galk again. Though that panel with Galatea behind Sid as she’s saving him really needs an icon going along the lines of “let the blind nun handle it, big guy.”

I’m not certain, but I think Agatha is the first and only case of truly sexualized nudity in the series. But then, she’s the tentacle monster attacking the big strong men who are being rescued by the blind nun and the little girl, so it fits with the extreme role reversal.

I’m also pretty fond of the two sidestories in this volume. Isley and Priscilla’s relationship is weirdly captivating, and it’s kind of amazing when you think about how so much of what he’s done is motivated by her wanting to find her parents. (Oh, sure, I’m certain he likes the whole world domination thing that goes with it, but…) Claire’s training days are just fun, and it’s nice to remember sometimes that she isn’t as powerful as everyone else, just incredibly clever, though not in the same was as, say, Riful, Miria or Galatea. And I like that her friend had muscles, as the slimness of the Claymores (while somewhat justified by how they’re so strong) is something that does bug me. And did she remind anyone else of Helen?
