Megan's itty bitty wuxia primer

I think I'm about to embark on a wuxia binge(sure, I only have 3 series waiting, but I could probably make that last a month)  As several people have friended me since I last watched wuxia(not that it's been that long) and some probably didn't know what I was talking about when I was posting, I have slapped together a wuxia guide-type post.

It ( Read more... )

I didn't watch Handsome Siblings but my dad did. I happened to catch glimpses of it though but couldn't get past the fact that Dicky Cheung (born 1965) plays the twin of Nicholas Tse (born 1980).

One of many problems with the eries. Actually, most of the problems boil down to "a 40 year old comedian was playing a 18 year old"

True. I felt deep down something was not quite right with this series when someone whose series I had watched when I was little was trying to playing a young man when I was 20. Oh well, at least my dad thought that aside from that the series was okay to watch.

Honestly, if they hadn't made his character so extreme and had had a better balance between the brothers, it would have been great, and maybe one of my favorites. But they approached it purely as "Dicky Cheung being funny"

I don't know why but that reminds me of Will Ferrell.

Anyway, about ROCH... it's strange that the same thing happened to me when I watched ROCH83 with Andy Lau when I was 10-11. I had previously seen LOCH94 but had pretty much forgotten everything about the plot because I didn't like that version (and because I was 8 at the time). But I watched ROCH83, liked Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu (They were rather likeable in this version) but in the end I was more interested in Guo Jing and Huang Rong and their story.

I think LOCH vs ROCH is Plot vs Romance. ROCH is 85% romance and 15% plot, and half that 15% is carryover from LOCH. Strip away the trappings, and ROCH is pretty much a very, very simple romance, whereas LOCH is obviously a much more complicated and plotty story. I don't find YG or XLN unlikable or anything, jut not as interesting as GJ and HR. But ROCH probably isz the best entry wuxia I've seen.

I think ROCH works best as a sequel to LOCH. My favorite part of ROCH is always the last few episodes because it ties together the remaining plotlines from LOCH. (although in the new version they did away with the original ROCH ending and replaced it with Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu flying towards the moon) LOCH is a more of a grand and coming of age story, not to mention that personally I find the romance between Guo Jing and Huang Rong a lot more real and better written.

Hmm...what's the original ending of ROCH,then?

I found what we saw of Guo Jing and Huang Rong' romance more interesting than the main romance in ROCH, myself.

I think the novel ends with some foreshadowing for the next novel Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. But before that comes the scenes that are usually used as the ending for ROCH adaptations. After the battle at Xiang Yang, Yang Guo finally tells everyone that Hong Qi Gong and Ouyang Feng died together at Mount Hua 16 years ago (I guess it just slipped his mind). They all go to Mount Hua to visit their graves and reflect on the irony of those two dying together when they were such enemies in life. Huang Yaoshi and Yideng are the only two "Greats" who are still alive, so they decide to pass on the three other titles to the next generation. Being Hong Qi Gong's disciple Guo Jing inherits his title and is called the Northern Hero. Since Yang Guo was Ouyang Feng's adopted son he inherits that title (can't remember what it was). Zhou Botong receives Wang Chongyang's title. Yang Guo then says that he and Xiao Long Nu just wants to live the rest of their lives in peace and they leave Mount Hua together ( ... )

Much better ending.

BTW, have you seen Twin of Brothers? I'm watching it now.

Hm, it's not the same story as Legendary Twins, right?

Nope, different story. I'm not sure where the name comes from...the heroes grew up as brothers, but arent. It's a tvb wuxia with ron ng and raymond lam.

Hm, might have to check that out. It's been a long time since I watched a TVB wuxia series.

I knew I was in for a treat when, about 10 minutes in, they said the golden vest had kung fu powers. That said...no way in *bleep* is Christine Ng old enough to be a mother figure to Ray and Ron...motherly older sister, sure, but not mother(at least they meet her when they're grown, though, and aren't actually her sons)
