I like both Luke and Han myself. Who says you can't like both?
Luke you pat on the head and say "Go forth and be heroic!" Then you turn to Han, point after Luke, and say "Go make sure he doesn't get himself killed."
I usually don't care much for rogue alone, but combine him with hero and I'm totally hooked. they work so much better in tandem than separately - they bring out each other nuances left unseen in any other way.
On their own, the hero is too pure and noble and you want to punch him in the face just to make sure he can cuss, and the rogue ends up being too much about attempts at being clever and his not quite being on the moral up-and-up until you want to roll your eyes, but combine them and they're great.
In Star Wars terms, we know Luke and Leia will always do what's right and try to save the universe. OTOH, we don't know if Han will try to save the universe or if he'll just say screw it and go haul them out of the line of fire, or just decide they don't need him anymore(not that Han has enough faith in their ability to stay aline for 5 minutes without him)...all we know is that he'll be in it to haul their bacon out of the fire, even if they don't want him to.
in SW they complete each other perfectly - Luke with save-them-all--at-any-cost attitude (suicidal most of the times), Han with I-don't-care-(except I totally do)-machismo and Leia with her political practicality in between, balancing them against each other precisely. they get much more one-dimensional on their own - Luke's too saintly, Han's too stereotypically and Leia's too bossy. but together? they work oh so good.
Yesm can you imagine how boring Star Wars would have been if it'd all been like the first 30 minutes of A New Hope? Once you got past the good sci-fi world part, we would've been bored out of our skulls. For that matter, how boring would it have been if Leia was some perfect, demure princess instead of a political spitfire. Alone, they'd all make us want to claw our eyes out, but together, they're what makes Star Wars good.
I very, very rarely read fanfic, but I shall mark that.
sorry, wrong account ^^''egelantierSeptember 4 2007, 15:42:44 UTC
lol, that's most perfect description of them I've ever heard. XD and then, of course, you turn to Leia and say "Please, make sure that those two will do everything right" =)

it's not the Big Sekrit or something, it's just written in Russian and deals with RL rather than fandom. I just slip with re-login from time to time, clumsy me.

Madmartigan is basically Han Solo with a sword in a lot of ways. And there is crossdressing.

(by the way, have you read three weeks after the end of the world (and counting)? it's SW apocalyfic by penknife, and it nails this relationship between them spot on)

It is, isn't it? The hero, the rogue, and the girl better than both put together.
I (almost) always love the hero, but I always have a thing for the guy who's in it just to keep someone from getting themselves killed.
