July comics: day 2

Aug 06, 2007 20:24

Today was Annihilation: Conquest Day.  Annihilation: Conquest day is a good an happy day.  Until one made me sad, and then I made Deadpool and the GLI cheer me up.

Wraith #1

Mysterious Unstoppable Hero:  Check
Really cool weapon: Check (it's this scifi whip/sword...thingie...I dunno...)
Vengeance Quest: Check
Lost Love(or sister...or something...she was dead or taken, he wants blood...): Check
Anti-hero tendencies without being an obnoxious jerk or overhyped:  Check
Zipping out on your outerspace motorcycle with robotic hordes chasing you:  Check

So, basically, it's about this guy with a cool weapon named Wraith who whips a whole lot of phalanx butt, gets approached by the Kree resistance later but blows them off because he wants to kill someone, then reconsiders when information is dangled in front of him like a carrot.  Then he lures phalanx hordes away and into space while riding an outerspace motorcycle thing, making me want a Wraith/Lobo crossover.  Anyway, great fun.

Quasar #1

Not the pure fun that Wraith was, but very good.  I've always liked Moondragon and I liked Phylla in the first Annihilation series, but I admit I've never been incredibly interested in either.  Phylla, it seems, is going to be running around  looking for some sort of savior of the universe.  There seem to be somewhat going with the "living up to a legacy" thing with the series (2 legacies, here-3 if you count Genis)  which isn't always my favorite thing, but I have faith.  There are somewhat "messiah quest" undertones to it, which are rather fitting as her current design is rather reminiscent of that of a medieval knight.  Complete with a giant glowy sword.  Yes, it seems that Annihilation: Conquest is the home of scifi sword things.  Yes, this makes me happy.

Starlord #1

The Dirty Dozen(well, half dozen plus one...) in space.  Led by Marvel's version of Mal Reynolds.  Thank you Mr. Giffen.  I hope you're getting paid more than certain hacks currently ruining the bulk of Marvel's Earthbound heroes.  Sadly, you probably aren't.

Anyway:  Suicide mission.  Starlord.  Bug.  Rocket Raccoon. Deathcry. Mantis.  Groot.  Captain Universe.  Captain Universe is destined to be mercilessly ripped into for thinking he's Captain America in space.  Groot is a giant tree who is the self-proclaimed monarch of Planet X.  Groot has apparently also bonded with the raccon.  I know too many yaoi fans and slashers to allow my mind to dwell on this beyond the obvious humor to be found in coming battle scenes.

Sadly, there were no scifi sword-like things in this one.  This depresses me.

Nova #4

*wanders off to a corner*

*cries*

*reminds self that this is comics and tells self he'll get over it.  And bring Garthaan Saal back with him when he does.*

Deadpool/GLI: Summer Fun Spectacular

*is dead from giggles*

The good kind of giggles...the kind you only get when reading something by people who truly love superhero comics and aren't remotely afraid to mercilessly poke fun at them without undermining them.  Sadly, superhero comic writers who love superhero comics are a rare thing at Marvel these days.

There needs to be a miniseries of nothing but Squirrel Girl going around and pointing out the sheer absurdities of many recent Marvel events.
