mostly Devil Beside You

Just finished DBY and...err...

WTF?

Seriously.

He just LEFT her for a year?  Ok, I've known about that for a while, but...I don't know...I thought it was handled well in Hana Yori Dango and it didn't really bother me there, so I guess I just assumed it'd be ok with me here, too, but apparently that's not the case.  I guess I was of with it in HYD because Domyoji didn't really have a choice, here, though, Ah Meng just decided to leave after seeing his mother a couple times.  I mean, I get that he wants to work out his problems with his mother and all, but really, he should at least figure out if he can stand to be in the same room with her for more than 5 minutes at a time before moving in with her.  It also bothered me that, for all their talk about being together and staying beside each other, he made a decision that hugely impacted both him and Qi Yue without really consulting her about it, and then he wasn't even the one to tell her about it...her mother was.  It also made me realize that, as much as Qi Yue protests and gets bent out of shape over things, she never really fights back against anything...other people fight her fights for her, and if they don't, she just takes it(while complaining)  I guess I just like my heroines to fight back(unless, like in period dramas, there's a very good reason she can't) or, if they start out spineless, to grow a spine and learn to stand up for themselves, such as in Nobuta wo Produce or Mars(and others, but those are likely the 2 most of my flist will recognize the most easily...this is actually a category of heroines I wish there was more of, as it obviously results in a lot of character growth)  I don't expect all my heroinbes to start out like Yankumi, Makino or Shan Cai, I just rather like there to be a spine in evidence.

And...ok, I realize sleeping together right before he left was supposed to be a big romantic thing, but really, all I could do do during that part was stare at the screen going "ok, how irresponsible can you get?"  Ignoring the fact that he's about to leave the country for a year and that they aren't married and have no real wedding plans and their entire future is iffy, I HIGHLY doubt either carries around a condom or she's on birth control or anything.  I mean, this isn't Goong, where they're married, or even Mars, where Ling likely had a whole drawer full of condoms, and I don't really see either one stopping to think "hey...we're about to not see each other for a year...lets get some protection first..."

Also, for all that fretting, everyone sure was very accepting of their getting together.  Really, the series should have ended there instead of the Ah Meng's mother/Italy part...at that point, there hadn't been enough development into his abandonment issues for us to really feel like we were missing a resolution, and it would have been much more satisfying without the end.

Coupla random bits:

-I really liked Mei Di(was worried I wouldn't at first) and kinda felt sorry for her.  They shoulda let her pair up with one of Ah Meng's friends.  *Tosses Wolf at her.  Sure, he's a dork and not overly bright, but he'd be a good boyfriend*

-What happened to Qi Yue's other friend the last handful of episodes?  The quieter one who always had a hat or toboggan on.  She seemed to just poof.  Also?  She needed a guy out of charity(seriously, every other regular female in the series got an OTP...it felt like they were just trying to leave her out)

-I didn't really care for the teacher or his plotline.  In fact, any scene with him and Qi Yue felt really pedophilic.  I did like his girlfriend, though, and liked when everyone was trying to help him win her(course, she deserved better than a guy who kept her waiting for years because he was hung up on a teenager.)

Moving on...

I was going to watch The Little Fairy next, but I suspect I'll want to squee over it with
calixa and
forgottenpolishin IMs when I watch, so I'm saving it for when I get back home full time.  Taking The Guts of Man instead.
