So, the Empire season finale happened. Not really unpredictable, in that a lot of it was things fans hoped for/theorized about a lot, but still quite a ride.
Nonspoilery:
The purple lipstick was strong this week.
Spoilery:
1. HE'S NOT DYING? THIS BETRAYAL I FEEL RIGHT NOW...
2. i was rather hoping Cookie and Malcolm would have sex on every hard surface in Lucious's house while Lucious rotted in jail, but I'll settle for Cookie moving into his house and redecorating.
3. So, Hakeem and Andre being Team Cookie in the end makes perfect sense for their respective arcs, both narrative and emotional. OTOH, Jamal rejecting Cookie and becoming Team Lucious more rejects his arcs, and I can't help but think it throws away the growth and independence he's gained throughout the season. Also, that boy is more than smart enough to realize Lucious only turned to him after being rejected by both Hakeem and Andre.
4. We always knew Anika wouldn't last 5 seconds against Cookie, despite her claims to the contrary, but she certainly tried. I hope there's lots of them having hate!sex working together next season.
5. I really, really wanted Cookie to smother Lucious, but I guess that just isn't her.
6. I guess Andre and Hakeem are the ones who turned Lucious in?
7a. Was Shonda Rhimes in charge of Vernon's death scene? Because all it needed to be a gender/race switched version of the HTGAWM death scene was for Vernon's blood to splatter on Andre's face even though the blow wouldn't have made it do so.
7b. Ok, writers, we know you know that a pregnant white woman who hit a black man over the head when he was choking (from her perspective) her husband in their home is...not going to go to jail over it. But really, I think how that went down was 100% to have Drama next season.
7c. THAT WAS THE WRONG CHARACTER DEATH, SHOW. YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO KILL LUCIOUS.
7d. To be fair, I'm neutral about Vernon, but I'll miss having Malik Yoba on my screen.
8. Becky putting both Hakeem and Lucious in their places was excellent. I hope there's a lot more of both Becky and Porsha next season, not to mention Tiana.
9. Given that Anika has probably been with Lucious since Hakeem was in his midteens (and, in fact, the only time the show hinted that Anika had any sort of personal relationship with any of the boys was when Hakeem detained her in the parking lot a few episodes back, at least as far as I can recall) I think it's safwe to say that Hakeem's parent issues reached new levels there.
I also watched the pilot of CW's iZombie and enjoyed it. it's getting a lot of Veronica Mars comparisons, and...well, yeah, pretty much the only way to make it more literally "zombie!Veronica Mars" would be to replace Rose McIver with Kristen Bell and put the characters in hight school.
