Bodacious Space Pirates is about pirates. IN SPACE. In case you couldn't tell from the title. I'd been curious about the series for a while because it was about pirates with a mostly female cast, but the title made me think it would likely be a fanservice fest. It was a terribly cute anime, yeah. Adored Chiaki. Someday I need to look up some Chiaki/Marika fanfics.

Oh, wow. This sounds amazing! I'd heard of the anime by title (which is, of course, ALSO AMAZING) but I didn't know anything else about it. Adding to my to-watch list. :D

I watched a couple eps and liked Chiaki and her relationship with Marika, but then heard she disappears in the second half of the series, so I checked out. :/

That...doesn't happen? She's very present in the first arc of the second half. She is gone for some episodes after that because she does have her own non-Marika related things to take over, including preparing to take over her own pirate ship, but she hardly disappears.

Oh, okay, well, thanks for clearing up that misconception! I might look into acquiring this series after all, then. I saw you mention she was in about 3/4 of the series which seemed to corroborate what I'd heard, but if she's still popping up and we know what she's doing for a reason (taking on a pirate ship seems legit!), then that's not as bad as I thought.
