Oh, Sleepy Hollow fandom...

I've pretty much given up on tumblr being a form of interaction that I really enjoy or feel is interactive for me (which isn't to say that i don't think it isn't interactive, it just isn't in a way that I can gel with).  However ,sometimes I still venture in, lately to the Sleepy Hollow tags, which consistently amaze me in their ability to become ( Read more... )

Okay, this is weird, 'cause I've been following a few Sleepy Hollow tumblrs that seem to respect both Katrina and Abbie (some of which include juicy meta about Abbie and Jenny and how it's kinda fucked up that two kids who were found in the woods after being missing were immediately taken to the police for interrogation and so forth). The showrunners have stated blankly that Katrina is alive and in purgatory (even though those seem to be kinda mutually exclusive, just go with it).

There is also a notable segment of the fandom that has decided the best solution to the Abbie/Ichabod/Katrina love triangle is a threesome.

The thing is, I've been avoiding the tag and mostly just taking Orlando Jones' lead on which bits of the fandom to check out. The man is honestly kinda terrifying in his acceptance of fandom weirdness.

Ah, interesting about the showrunners and Katrina.. I avoid things they say that are spoilery. Revolution's showrunners rather scarred me forthat.

Sleepy Hollow's showrunners seem to be cooler about stuff than most, from what I've seen. There's a quote going around about how they've got such a diverse cast, so they're free to kill off as many white guys as they like. . .

Would you like recommendations for tumblrs that don't make me yell at the screen? Because honestly, if you're not following Orlando Jones, you should be. The man is both terrifying and awe-inspiring and will actively recommend fic he enjoys.

I'm glad I stopped being interested in fandom discussions and never bothered really checking out tumblr. I'm missing out on good stuff, but on the other hand I just want to enjoy whatever I'm watching without having to think about how much some random people hate this or that.
The exception being what lj friends talk about their fandoms, because those are not opinions of some random strangers.
Which reminds me that I comment way, way less than I should, because I rather enjoy your views on whichever show we're both following.

I'd never go to tumblr except that's where people are these days, sadly.

But what you say is also an example of why tumblr can frustrate me, because it's hard to have that same control over what you see. Even if you only check your dash and don't check out the tags, people can't really go back and forth without reblogging a post and adding to it, and the whole reblogging system means that you don't go "this is annoying. people are saying this" with maybe "and here's a link for proof," Nope, you get the actual offending posts on your dash. Sometimes 10 times.

Hmm...I use 'bros' and 'BrOTP' a lot when describing fictional friendships I like but I never really thought of it as problematic. I just wanted some term to use for relationships I love but in which I don't actually ship the characters, as that's a rarity for me since I ship practically everything :) For instance, Emily/Aria would be a BrOTP for me because I love their friendship but don't ship them. Which I can't say for Spencer/Aria :)

But back to your actual point: I've never understood fandom's tendency to hate on the character "getting in the way" of their ship. Or I should say, the female character, because fandom tends to forgive male characters who interfere with their OTPs. I will also never understand not being able to like two fictional women at once. Even if they're in competition with one another, I don't know why fandom thinks you can't love them both because it's actually very easy and makes the canon more enjoyable :)

"Bros" and "BroTP" aren't quite the same as fandom's tendency to refer to WoC as a "bro" as an explanation for why her relationships are totally platonic. But I have always rather disliked the term"bromance" in general, and how it gets applied to pretty much any close friendship, because it's assigning masculine qualities to the relationship and implies that the ability to have close, important, non-romantic relationships is a masculine trait. (And I know that's not how fandom uses it, for the most part, but...)

I never thought about it that way, but you're obviously right in that bromance is masculine and so is anything taken from it.
