As I mentioned to a friend who just started watching Once recently, this is the only show ever where the ruling fanon ship is the main character and her stepgrandmother, and where many a fan is prone to going "you are mother and daughter, not girl friends, STOP THAT!"

I think part of my issue with Elementary is that, in certain ways, he's getting worse as he becomes more aware. (TBH, if they'd mentioned Joan leaving a few times in the last couple episodes, it'd be easy to fanwank it as his reaction to the threat of her leaving combined with his refusal to admit he doesn't want that.) It's probably worth mentioning that I've never been a Sherlock Holmes fan (the only version prior to this that made any impression on my were the TV movie in which Margaret Collin played Watson's greatgranddaughter-Elementary is the third modern day female Watson that I know of-who found Holmes cryogenically frozen in the basement, and Without A Clue) and this is the only time I've lked Homes as a character. (I've never seen a single scene of Sherlock, and nothing I've heard about it makes me think I'd want to.)

Yup. My only real SH adaptations prior to this have been RDJ Sherlock and BBC Sherlock. Both of which are pretty ~questionable in terms of a lot of things. (Oh god. If you had problems with Elementary's chinatown, then you definitely would want to fling BBC Sherlock's chinatown at the sun. (Basically every asian in the entire show is completely and horrifically stereotyped, and really only there for one episode.)) I've never really been a fan of SH adaptations, but I have enjoyed them to a certain degree. I still haven't read the originals though.

I agree with you. I've watched both listed above but with both it's more like I'm watching them and I'm not really invested in anyone's story where here I am so invested in both of them ♥ ♥.
